We visited Esther last saturday to pick up my new hat.

Here we meet our lovely host.

We visited a beautiful neighbourhood in Antwerp

Then drinks and a great dinner.

The next day day we used the Antwerp museum app to take a guided tour through the city center.

It really is a beautiful city.

Oh, and here's the hat, against the backdrop of one of our largest discount drugstores.

And Simone, just because.

A hat room, now there's something I need, my hats are just all over the place... That Stetson plastic felt is interesting, I've never seen one of those before. Great to see the real thing next to the original advert!

Know Superfine. Snug fitting fed for a 25 MPH wind day. I don't normally get many 20 something comments but today several young men and young ladies had pleasant comments. They must have thought I was the Undercover Boss.

Another interesting presentation my friend. Plastics were becoming a big thing post war, and why not put it in hats, big market there. Love the stitching, all of it, all over!

Yes, a time when plastic spelled optimism. As you can see from the content label, the plastic fiber used in this hat is Vinyon - a PVC fiber that was invented in 1939 and seems to have qualities as a binder in non-woven fabrics (i.e., felt). This plastic felt is constructed in the manner of a cloth hat. There are none of the usual Stetson labels inside - even the size label is non-standard. I've wondered if the entire manufacture was outsourced to another factory.

Thanks again Celia... I have seen one or two for sale over the last several years. I don't think it was much of a success and was probably ended as traditional materials became more available after the war.

We once had kids living in the hat room but they moved on as kids are wont to do. A dangerous amount of free space, but collecting hats is much more fun than AirBnb, I think. 8^)
