Summer's Sweet Revenge...Or...Monte Cristos, Dragons, and "Bullets" On A Stick!

Getting off the train at the Minnesota State Fair Saturday morning. OPTIMO Montecristi. The Royal American Shows Pullman is actually part of a collection of rolling stock at the State Fairgrounds.

The record crowds have yet to descend upon the Fair this early in the day.

The finest sandwich served at the Fair...naturally.

Saying farewell to Summer and attending the closing performance of "Sweet Revenge" on the University Of Minnesota's Centennial Showboat Saturday evening. Our sixth! show this Summer, having caught their opening night at the beginning of Summer way back in June.

Record breaking temperatures and a heat index in the 110sF could not keep us away from the annual Wheels Of Italy gathering Sunday morning. OPTIMO Montecristi.

The heat apparently had a significant impact upon car owners and enthusiasts alike, as attendance was the lowest we have seen since the inaugural show a decade ago. A pictorial from the 2011 Show in FEDORAS AFIELD for those gear heads among us.

We love what our car(Alfa Romeo) nut friends Dan and Brian have built over the past ten years with a lot of hard work and grass-roots enthusiast support.

Wrestling with a dragon. An incredible zinc dragon/gargoyle rain spout, one of a pair, salvaged from a late 19th century library in Wisconsin by our friend Jim.

A parting shot from "Kid Bullets" DeGidio's place in St. Paul, a favorite gangster hangout back in the 1930s and a favorite hangout for us in the 2010s.

Ahhh...power back on this morning. Our generator worked to save the contents of our freezer and refrigerator. It is a true luxury to complete a dog walk and some outdoor chores and come inside to air conditioning and a hot water shower. I walked this morning, 82'F at 7:00am, in my short brimmed milan. I am sipping an IPA beer for breakfast by the lake shore. A day off enjoying life. High this afternoon in the upper 90'sF.

Te olette tervetullut, minun suomalainen ystäväni.

+1. Excellent hats today.

Al; Wow, you pics remind me that I have a date with my wife to go to the MN State Fair late this week. I hope my white shirt can look as crisp and neat after a day with 200,000+ of our MN neighbors.

Jaoa; Thanks for sharing your hats and your corner of the world. It looks just gorgeous.

Nigel - I've now got a crick in my neck, but it looks good :)

Mikko - looks good on you. I think crown height is less important than crown taper - unless you've got a fairly thin face, the straighter the sides the better.

Charlie - the panama looks great.

Andy - looks good. I'm about to crack and order a Fed in Moonstone -just the decision on Imperial or Deluxe to make.

Randall - Nice pic of both of you, and a great location.

Alan - Lovely Strat

Sam - That's a gorgeous Knox

Joao - thanks for location shots - looks a fascinating place. The hats look great too

AL - Wonderful Monticristi's and great photos again.

Eric - I think after a few hours of those temperatures I'd be wanting more than one beer :) Great Milan

You fellas are too kind, quite tolerant of my fuzzy photos, and your hats all outshine mine on a daily basis. Such fun seeing what you all are wearing! Thanks each and every one of you for the pictures.

Manfred, I have shrunk to 6'3" over the course of the last few years, and yes, my wife is indeed a diminutive woman at 5'4".

Keep up the hat-wearing, gents!

Thank you. I do agree that crown taper is not a good thing. Fortunately this stetson has less taper than I was exepting and it doesn´t look too bad. The sides are not completely straight but the taper is so mild that I can´t really notise it with naked eye.

Agreed - the taper is pretty limited, especially for a modern hat.

I must be the only guy getting taller. I was always about 5'11" but measure well over six feet now in some of my Stetson westerns.

Thanks for the Stratooneliners and for everyone's great pictures.

AL, I want to tag along on your weekends.

Adding some much needed height to my usual 5' 5" today... I'm about 5' 11" in my new tumwater!

It's an insane 95 with 88 per cent humidity right now!

Bowlerman - the ribbon work on the Tumwater is especially nice.

Richard - I think the various fawn colors are Akubra's most versatile. I tend to wear my Heritage Fawn Fed IV more than my Moonstone.

I used to be 5' 6". If I'm getting taller, it's only in my dreams.

Agree, Eric, and beautiful Milan today. Have a great time when you and your wife go to the State Fair this week. We have to go back on Saturday as well. Amazing how many familiar faces we bump into in a sea of Minnesotans.

Al, wow, what a great weekend with a lot of Action. Fantastic shots and a Fantastic Optimo!

Thanks, Manfred. Looks like you had a busy weekend as well! Nice haul, by the way, and great looking hats.

My niecse was married this Saturday in an outdoor wedding at her parents house. I wore my new DelMonico Gade 8 Sanibel Bleached Panama.

Sunday the Uncles got togther to cook brunch for about 80 people left from the night before. Sunday was the birthday of the United States National Park Service so I had to wear my official USNPS Stetson Smokey the Bear Hat
