I've noticed that a lot of Parker's hats on his web-site have flat brims, leading me to believe that he mainly uses a flat flange. On vintage hats, I do end up flattening the sides, somewhat, while still keeping a noticeable rise to the back. I've gone back and forth with some of my hats, but yes, I do prefer a flatter flange overall.

I had noticed the same with the pictures, so while I was setting up an order for a Maltese Falcon clone similar to his "Falcon", I had discussed with him several times about the flange. He has the capability to do a rounder look, or even a snap brim, so in the end I said simply to do whatever he feels would best represent Sam Spade's hat. I'll be looking forward to the results.

The self-shots do cause a bit of concern for my wife as well. When she gets a bit weird about it I just let her know that it's a hobby. It's not like I'm trolling in parks or public bathrooms late at night. Then I try to find photos of Alan with his wife and daughter or Delectans with his family and say "Look, it's not a man-love forum! There are people with wives here!" Then she looks back at me with a strange expression and says I'm overdoing my defense [huh]

- Just kidding, she doesn't actually say any of that though she does occasionally question the amount of time and money this hobby takes. I counter the financial aspect with the fact that most of my purchases end up passed on as I only want to keep the hats that will get regular use.

Thanks... This hat dates from the 1920s. It has an earlier sweatband lot# stamp than either of my furry western Nutrias.

Not knowing for sure the actual fur content of any of my hats, I would describe these early nutria hats as soft... like a baby's cheek. The brims are also very flexible - completely different from modern western hats. Nutria was marketed for durability. It may be the luck of the draw, but this hat, with its Fray sweatband shows almost no scars from nine decades of life. The seller, in her ebay auction description, said she was not sure, but thought this was a vintage hat.

My wife questions my sanity as well, and asks me, "Why can't you just look at porn like other guys?" As for collecting, I think I have you all beat. Two ex-wives, a current wife, a live-in mother-in-law, two daughters, 1 granddaughter, 3 female dogs and 4 female cats.
