Well I purchased my first hat 2 weeks ago and it was a wool felt pork pie. I started reading about hats on this site and I became aware that fur felt and vintage are generally better quality hats. I saw a hat on an online buy and sell site. It was an hour and a half drive away but I decided to drive there. It seems that I take a 7 3/8 size and this one was listed as 7 1/2.

I arrived there a few mins ago and didn't even try it on before purchase. I just tried it on now for these pics.

It turns out to have a box it was sold in in the early 1950s. It is a biltmore Canada box but inside the box is a grey Stetson Whippet I believe.

Now my big question is how to clean it.

It needs a cleaning in the ribbon and the hat looks like it needs a little cleaning.

However inside that hat is really clean with no staining.

Any suggestions?

That's a monster way to start the vintage collection, Will! Wonderful.

For day to day "get the dust and cat hair off" maintenance, I use a sponge like this: Freeshipping M F Foot and Headwear Mens MF Felt Hat Cleaning Sponge https://www.amazon.com/dp/B008E2K358/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_tpJYAbANTZ4HC
Hat brushes can be had for very little cash, too. A good steam and brushing or sponging can do wonders for a dusty old hat.

For very dirty hats, I've had good luck using Coleman's camping fuel. It is Naptha, also known as white gas. There are good, detailed posts on the Lounge for that. Just do a Google "Naptha fedora lounge" search. You'll get a bunch of hits.

Of course, sending it to a professional is a great bet, too. Optimo in Chicago does a good job, I hear. Bob, at Black Sheep Hat Works has helped me, too.

Congratulations again on the score.
Absolutely KILLER.

Good morning folks. I have today off!

Very early I went to the grocery store. Suprising how much "normal groceries" cost. Many bags at around $40/bag. Wore a Simonds wool cap for the errand.

Thanks for letting me share. Shortly I am starting the grill up for an brunch.

Best, Eric -
Have a great day off Eric. Love the gray! Cool wind cord, is it original to the hat?

Damn Son, you are jumping right into this hat thing. Very impressive. If you do not have one yet, a good hat brush will be your first line of defense. I have a few of them, bought off of Amazon. From that point, we have many threads around here for cleaning and maintenance. Does the sweat band have "Whippet" on it with the Stetson Logo? Next, we will want to see pictures of the manufacturer tags under the sweat. Be careful if it is at all brittle. A good leather conditioner will be your friend. Search Pecards on Amazon, I like this stuff.

Hi Red.

Thanks for the message. Attached are pics of the inner leather band. I did not know Stetson Made hats in Canada in the 50s but this is what it says.
