OK here I go interrupting a thread again, but I'll be quick...

indycop - I notice the black band across your badge, and I understand that this is in recognition of a fallen officer. You already explained the circumstances of this tragedy to me, but I was curious about the etiquette of the black band across the badge. Is it done by order from police chiefs, or do cops take it upon themselves to do it? Are you provided with a black band, or do you have to manufacture one, and if so, what do you use? Lastly, how long do you normally wear this band before returning your badge to its uncovered state.

I hope nobody thinks I am trivialising the situation by asking such frivolous questions, but I was curious to know more about it.

The chief sets the time up to 30 days or as little as a week or 2. They issued the band, but we have been keeping them due to a record year of officer deaths. Many in florida alone it seems. Nationwide far surpassing last year at this time. it will come off this week.

I wore my Marshall field & co black furry hat. It's an old one, that's for sure. I just got it in. I'm thinking '20s. Any guesses?

First bit of cool weather in a while- wore the hat in my avatar-a Resistol
"Beaver One Hundred"; thin ribbon, edge bound, 4 1/2" crown bashed into a
traditional teardrop. Soft as a baby's bottom, and smells better.

It's like really deep velour. way deeper and fuzzier than any other fuzzy hat I have or have had. I was looking at it, and I pulled out the ruler. It has a dimensional brim, but not in the way you'd think. It's 2-1/2" in the front, and the sides, but only 2-1/4" in the back. It's subtle, but it gives it a kind of different look.

From the picture, can you tell scale on the sweatband at all? The stitching holding it in is minuscule.

It's hard to tell, but it looks like the sweat may have been replaced at one point, as there appear to be remains of stitching from a directly sewn to the felt sweatband
