Stetson The Motor... one of those hats you buy for the typeface. A few have put-puttered onto the Lounge and there is a little thread dedicated to this moment in Stetson and automotive history here. I repaired tears in the felt forward and aft - tolerable job but keeps me from wearing this more often. It was nice to steam it up and get it out in the daylight today.

From the bounty of my black hat collection, here is an old Vanzina that might perhaps be a rare example of the work of this manufacturer before their absorption into Borsalino during or after the depression. The style has a tall crown and narrow brim, an alpine flavor which reflects the location of the retailer in Brunico, a southern Tyrolean city in Italy within 20 kilometers of the Austrian border. The basting thread that protects the ribbon and elaborate bow remains in place. I don't believe this hat was ever sold to or worn by a consumer. Daniele might have additional thoughts/information.

I just had to go back to this Vanzina, Alan. It's so perfectly gorgeous. The double wings on both sides of the bow really appeal to me. It's something I have been questioning in my mind, but never thought to ask about it until I saw this picture. I've wondered why hatters don't double up the wings on both the front and back (left and right?) sides of the bow. It just looks more symmetrical to me (and that's my curse, LOL, feeling a need for symmetry in an otherwise asymmetrical world). I wonder if it's just that much harder to do or.....???

Anyway, I spoke to the hatter, as I came up in his queue recently, and he said he could do it. I am going with a different knot for the center of the bow, but still keeping it simple with NO highlights (which I ordinarily love) and nothing too "busy" looking. I think the simplicity adds to the charm. I'm not going for the external basting stitches, either, but the style of the bow has me in fits. LOVE it!

Thanks again for posting this Alan, it has opened new doors for me!

The gold font is awesome. "The Motor", what an outstanding name. Do you figure it to be 1910 - 1912-ish?

Hey everyone!
Brent boater yesterday, Brent felt today. This Airlite keeps the bright out of my eyes on a sunny but crisp (but still short-sleevable) afternoon.

I tried to grimace less for Bob, but it's kind of a reflex as I try to line up the pic. Like the faces batters make at the plate while waiting for a pitch. Man, I can't wait for baseball...
Have a great day!

My first attempt at a hat-from-scratch. A Blue Monkey creation with a big blue sawtooth:

The would-have-been brim binding on this gave me serious grief after one too many re-stitches so I just trimmed a quarter inch off the edge and left it raw. The next blank comes tomorrow and I'm not calling it done until its edge is bound.

Nice lids, everyone!
Looks great, bAm! You're a natural, I think!
