Today I wore a Dobbs no-model-name.

In the first shot I'm doing my best J.C. Penney's catalog schtick lol :

This one's for my buddy, Warbird!!:

Gene, in my many years on this board (give or take a few months), I have to say that this is one of my very favorite hats. I love the colors of both the felt and the ribbon. They go very well together. And its style, brim width, etc. are the kind I like the best. Thanks for posting.

Is that the much "discussed" homburg? If it is, regardless of any particular outlook, it's nice to see you had thick enough skin to come back for more. It looks pretty good in that picture. I'm inclined to state publicly that if you'd posted that in the classifieds at a price relative to the amount of use you seem to be getting from it, you'd not have had many takers. While I am firmly in the camp that believes it shoulda been left as it was, I've also got to admit you've got a quality hat that you want to wear now. Can't beat that.
That's it! I just did not want to sell it because I knew I could make the hat exactly how I wanted.. and I couldn't pass up on the color, crown height, quality, etc. in the size I wear. But I don't like messing with too many hats unless I know I can make it work.

Dundee, Your Fed IV looks terrific. One of the best shots of someone wearing that hat to date.

Gene, Pigeon Pollen Gumtree Poop aside, that Dodds is sweet! Is the color taupe?

Jauntyone, Nice family photo.

gtd, That's a great Borso. Good decision.

Kiltie, Beautiful Playboy.

Wil, The Sovereign looks good on you. Good move to the wider brim.

UWS, Glad to see you're hanging in there and wearing that St. Regis.

Thanks so much everyone!
I'm really enjoying the Playboy; one of the early must-haves for me. The best part is, it's my first vintage long oval, making it a dream of a fit. I hope some time to score another, but I know there's some heavy competition out there;) .

Poop? Noop.

Taupe? Nope.

This Dobbs is a unique color. The first photo shows it best but it's even a touch 'warmer' than that. A real rich chocolate milk number. And the rusty brown ribbon is a cool combo. Light and comfy too.

Thanks, Pduck & others for noticin'. This is one of the hats that really seems to go with anything.

I really enjoyed looking through the recent posts. They're all great hats but there are a couple of Stetsons in the bunch that make me a little envious. You know who you are, you dogs! ;)

Wore my Champ Kasmir finish OR clone in medium brown today:

Is it my imagination, or do the OR clones usually look better than the actual OR's?
Nope, It's not your imagination. In many cases the felt used in the clones is better than the felt in many (especially modern) ORs. IMHO, the felt in my Shudde Bros., Beaver Brand, and Borsalino OR clones is definitely superior to that of most (not all) of my Stetson ORs. Not to mention the fact that the Akubra Campdraft is a better looking hat than the modern OR.

Shhhhhhh! Don't tell anybody. The prices will go up. :D

SO true. lol

Yup, the Champ has a great hand as does the LaSalle I've posted. I have three actual ORs and two Stratoliners. They are great and the more I wear and handle them the softer the felt becomes, but the Champ has 'em beat.

OR's came in Royal, Royal DeLuxe, Sovereign, 3X & possibly higher. So comparing a clone against all grades of Stetson OR's would be problematic. Yes against the lower levels the clones would win, not sure about the upper levels!

NB13, THAT is a stylish hat and suit combo. One of your better looks I think. Very nice!

Good point. Which is why an OR clone may be a better grade felt against some Open Road models by Stetson. Even at that, the quality of felt in the clones can vary as widely as the quality of felt in the Stetson OR's.
If we were only discussing the Akubra Campdraft, which was marketed as the Open Road until the Akubra-Stetson relationship ended in the 90's, we'd be talking about the same hat with a new name. Akubra says the Campdraft is identical to the Open Road they made when in partnership with Stetson. I'm not sure the Campdraft can legitimately be called a clone just because the name changed when the partnership ended.
