gtd -- you're crackin' me up today. :) I agree with Carter, I think the hat looks great on you. If you are used to wearing a lid "brim down" in back, then having the brim up may feel/look odd at first. I'd give it a little time just to get used to it.

That being said, here's another trick to try out... Very often, particularly on my ORs, I will have the brim turned up in back (since the brim is already flanged that way) -- but I will steam the back of the brim, put the hat on my noggin', and then press down (using a sweeping motion) while checking out the look in the mirror. Using this process, you can position the back of the brim very close to where it would be if it were turned down. The result is that you get a kind of "turned down" feel to the back of the brim, but still have a turned up look going at the same time. This technique can help to give a nice overall curve to the brim as a whole. This may help to address that feeling you have about the hat looking too high on your head. Hope this all makes sense...:)

Cheers,
JtL

You are so right Jim, thats the way I have most of my hats now.
I like my brim backs to have what I call a relaxed curl, when we meet in Mont Eagle you will be able to see what Jimmy is talking about! :D

I can tell, Rusty. In some of your straight-on photos, it appears that you have a turned down brim in back. But, having seen a photo or two of your lids :)D) -- I know better. I think it's a great look, particularly for a thin-ribbon.

I was messing with it on the train/bus ride home & there seems to be another setting with the back brim. If I have it on & turned down, I can easily push up on the back edge & it will pop up slightly. If I push harder it snaps all the way up. Just looked at in the mirror when I got home & think it's what you guys are refering to. Thanks again...

RBH,seeing all of your thin ribbon hats has inspired me to start wearing a few of mine again. Today's has a 3" brim which is not common for me. I am never sure if it works right. A mans gotta try though.

JTL, Man you have great hats! I am so glad we don't have the same head size.

Douglas, The 3" brim on that OR looks good on you. It may be a wider than those you normally wear but, no worries, you are rockin' the look.

It's snowing in Aberdeen..but not fluffy, more of the muddy kind. But snow usually means less wind and hence one of the few days I can wear a hat :) (in contrast to my flatcap).

That's me and my black stetson hat (my only hat so far apart from a flatcap). Got it as a present from the lady, I just love her:)

Carter, I've got a newbie question for you: How late into the spring and or summer can you wear a felt in Dallas? I live in Norman so the temp difference isn't too much between us. I'll take my question out of this thread if the answer is detailed, but I've been wanting to ask you for a while. I should be getting my first Work of Art around March or early April but would hate to be forced to sock it away before I can hardly wear it. I'm hoping you go into June.

I like to suggest this view as to the straw versus felt hat controversy.

The switch from felt to straw has a number of "rules" but the most important consideration is simply the one of personal comfort. If it's too hot for you to wear a felt hat then it's time to switch to straw. With the weather's ability to be wide ranging, comfort is more reliable than a specific date.

Jabos, I usually make the switch in late May or early June. An unlined, lightweight felt can go a bit later into the warm months. I usually make the switch back to felt with a liner in early October.
