I'm no expert at this sort of thing, but I wonder, has the most mature of the three ladies been giving lessons to the younger ones? [huh] lol

New Bash

Two or more years ago I bought a beautiful Dobbs Twenty with box for about $25 in an antique store. Like new. The crown was more like a homburg with a narrow snapdown brim. I loved it and it fit beautifully, but it looked so dressy—and I look so shabby most of the time—that I never wore it outside.
BUT, thanks to all you guys talking about your bashing, I woke up and decided to see if I couldn't do something, so I smoothed the hat all out and then spread the bash at the rear and formed long dents in the sides to an almost pinch front and now when I put it on, it looks really sharp, yet not necessarily too dressy. Looks something like that fedora that Dana Andrews wore in Laura. Now I'm going to wear it all the time!
Thanks Fedora Lounge. A great place to learn all about chapeaux.lol

Gentlemen, Since the Tipi received so many positive comments, I decided to update my avatar. :)

I also purchased a Bat Masterson derby and a flat-crown/brim Town hat, both black, from the American Buffalo Collection, at HATCO. Both are a lighter weight than the Tipi. I'll post pictures either here or in the Western Anyone? thread (or both).

J.M., I was actually thinking that you'd like this hat when I bought it. You'll like it as long as the weight isn't a problem. It's definitely not a lite felt.

CJ & Rusty, Thanks for the positive comments on whiskers. :) It's a winter thing.

I think carter looks right at home here in Texas! Just like any number of the ranchers down where I grew up. The whiskers top it all off; perfect appearance.

Mr. Carter, I did a search & read all the buffalo felt threads that I could find here. I was looking into a buffalo hat from Stetson (Hatco owned, right?) in their American Buffalo Collection. Shepler's has it on sale & I'm heading to OKC next week. Cabelas also carries Stetson's line. When I look for Hatco online, I get the Resistol website = all western hats, no derbies or town hats. I'm really looking for a rugged hat to wear at hunt camp & foul weather, figure buffalo could take it. Your opinions? Is the Hatco buffalo collection online? TIA gtd

I've been wearing this "Generic Newsie" for the last few weeks:

<a href="http://s101.photobucket.com/albums/m76/gillmanfan/?action=view&current=GenericNewsie.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m76/gillmanfan/GenericNewsie.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

It's actually a dark grey/graphite color. The material looks and feels like a thick flannel but it's really a poly-blend. Set me back a whopping $12 and goes with everything.

gtdean48, It's just Carter. Mr. Carter was my dad. ;) :)

When you search online, search Stetson American Buffalo Collection. You'll find some retailers with the line. Quality hats is one.

They carry the Bat Masterson

Their Austral looks like my Town in a different color felt

I like the Big 4 which is a Mountie Block with a pencil roll brim,
Big4bu1.jpg

their Sheridan with a center dent, two side dents, and a pencil roll brim,

and the Blackfire (mostly because of the brim lacing).

Remember, HATCO is a manufacturer and wholesaler that sells to retailers. They have an Outlet Store in Garland, TX but not online. So you need to search for the product line as sold by retailers.

Also, HATCO has all sorts of blocks and flanges so they can make many combinations of crowns and brims. They also have many dirrerent felts, grades of felts, colors of felts. Since they make some styles specifically for a particular retailer, any change in any of the variables mentioned can result in very similar but different product with a different name sold exclusively by a different retailer. Change one variable and you have a new product with a new name. It's more than I'd care to keep up with.

The three that I have certainly seem to be rugged but I can only vouch for the fact that they are quite substantial, keep my head warm and covered, and look pretty good. I suspect that they will be durable as well. Time will tell.

Do some research online. Look at as many hats and different retailers as you can. Try on as many hats as possible. You'll find the right one(s) for you eventually.

Thanks Carter, didn't want to be too familiar from the jump, so I'll gladly drop the "Mr." part. I had found Stetson's webpage,
http://www.stetsonhat.com/collections.php?cat_id=10 , as well as the Quality Hats one that you graciously provided. I am a big web shopper but do like to go places to try on the different brands, especially with hats & boots. I doubt my wife will allow me to bring back another "dang hat" from our OKC trip but she can't stop the UPS delivery! gtd
