90 degrees, no rain in sight. Got to be a Panama! Funny that, so far I have only 3 (essentially ruined one). They are all from Panama Bob. This one is a Brisa weave Quenca, and it is basically my least expensive hat. Had more compliments on it than any other, including my Chiropractor today, and a total stranger at Walmart in South Florida. And at Henry The Hatter's in Downtown Detroit today, one Customer exclaimed "Yeah, I want a wide brim, like he's got".

Funny also, a lady who worked there was about to call me a liar (I'd been looking at one hat, asking if it was a genuine Panama, to which she replied it was a Shantung Panama, so I said "so, no"). She was about to imply that I knew nothing when I told her mine (sitting on the counter, I was trying on hats) was genuine. Look of a BS detector going off, she said "this is a Panama?" I told her it was an inexpensive one, a Brisa weave from Cuenca (she had obviously never heard either of those words before). Reading the inside, she said "it's a toqui..." can't recall what she said, but she was mispronouncing it (100% Paja Toquilla), obviously other words she'd not heard. I told them (several employees were listening, including the Owner's Son who was helping me, and who did a great job) that he also does source Montecristi's (ah, finally! A word with which she was familiar, albeit vaguely). "Yes, those are good" she said (they had several fine examples of Montecristi's there in the shop in fact, one I tried on was marked down from $750 to $500).

Well really, they were very accommodating there at Henry's, and the one lady's lack of lower end Panama Hats aside (not their market, they don't sell them at all, just genuine ones and then the Shantung imposters...) they were all good. The young man who was working with me knew his stuff, knew what he didn't know (he asked his Superior a few times when he didn't know, and Joe Da Hat was happy to answer him) and made no pretense of knowing what he didn't (I like and respect that in a Salesman!). Eventually, I did get to talk with Joe a bit also, and tried on about a dozen hats in all.

Did I buy anything? Yep. 2 brushes, 3 Puggarees (sp?) and one Big Apple flat cap in linen that will show up here eventually. But this one is about "WHAYW today".

I was a wuthering around in my blue plaid hat people cap today  Also wearing the Pendleton wool shirt that Carol Young found for me in a thrift store. Can't get these in Australia, though I've managed to pick up another one on ebay.

Thanks, Eric, for your very kind words and incredible story! Oh the memories of yesteryear...

I know we will both be glued to TdF coverage for hours on end over the next three weeks...it should be another memorable and epic race. Summer just would not feel the same without this spectacle!

Our best wishes to you and your family for a safe and exciting long weekend. Glorious weather this holiday weekend in Minnesota following a turbulent evening.

Have a great 4th, everyone!

Nice djd. The more I see of these Raiders hats the more I think I want one - even though I'm probably the only person on the planet who's never watched an Indiana Jones film.

Thanks David :)

I didn't get any Indy comments at all yesterday - this style of fedora makes a nice dress hat with the right suit I think

It goes well with your suit. I was thinking an Indy hat would be good for hiking and outdoor fun, but you're right, it can be dressy as well.
Hmm, Fed IV or AB Henry? That is the question!

I've had both David. The fed IV is a great hat for the money but I think the AB Henry is a much nicer hat. Its a much softer felt.
