Grabbed this at a bargain. Never had a Mallory. Curious to see if the edge binding is wider on the bottom due to that brim stitching past the binding. 1817 so must be post Stetson acquisition but it is a Pliafelt!

Thinking of adding this one. Anyone have any experience/comments?

Akubra's legendary quality is available in a hemp straw hat. The fibers are naturally resistant to mold and ultraviolet light and are extremely resistant to abrasion. The Balmoral has a finer weave than the Range giving it more flexibility and a more refined look. It has a 2¾" brim and a pinch front crown that measures 4¼" at the front, 4⅝" inches on the sides and finishing at 4" in the back. Features include a bonded leather band and reeded roan leather sweatband.

I received my gray Silver Canyon outback style hat this afternoon. The color is a rich gray and I absolutely love it. The hand of the felt is very nice and lightweight. I’ve decided to change the crease to a diamond from it’s factory teardrop crease. I have plenty of crown height to work with and I’m excited to get started. I’m thinking hard about converting it from an underwelt too a raw edge and cutting the brim too 2 3/8” from it’s original 3”. I’m going full on custom with this hat and changing it from an outback style cowboy hat too a fedora. I’ll post pictures in the conversion corral when I’m done. Here are some pictures of how it arrived. Not a bad price at $49 to my door. The fit is perfect for my 7 1/2” noggin. :)

I would advise against cutting the brim. This is a cheap wool felt hat with a wire in the brim, if you remove that, the brim is likely to be too soft & floppy to keep any kind of shape. Likewise the low, tapered crown is unlikely to cooperate with your plans to put in a diamond crease.
Experiment by all means but don't get your hopes up too high.;)

I already did the conversion. I posted the conversion in the Conversion Corral: https://www.thefedoralounge.com/threads/the-conversion-corral.22306/page-250#post-2510864

Soft and floppy are not an issue as I added stiffener while I was steaming the felt. As far as the low crown that wasn’t an issue either I steamed the crown open and them rebashed it with the diamond crease. Thanks for your advice I do appreciate it.

In a rather unusual move on my part, my friend and photography mentor now has a line of Stetsons named/made for him. It's a wide-brimmed, wool hat made in 18% grey (you photographers will understand), all-season photographer's hat.
