I bet someone paid a pretty penny for that "Crappy Cowboy Hat" when new! I hope you got a great deal on it Brent. It appears to be a special one.
Definitely appears to be a lightweight felt. In fact it looks a pretty floppy tyrolean currently from the seller photos. For me though. The liner… the size tag and the OPS tag @$25 tells an interesting story. Possibly all may not be as it appears…. Or maybe it is. $15 shipped is worth poking around. Italian American Oktoberfest?I'm guessing that will be a lightweight one! And it's O.P.S. era to boot. Good get Joe -- looking forward to seeing more.

I think I read on Brad’s page that the John Cavanagh name on the liner may have gone through to 50 or 51. That might slightly overlap into OPS. my original thoughts was maybe the liner was stuck in after the fact. The size tag is more like Mallory or Borsalino. OPS of $25 for a light weight hat made in 1951 seems a bit high. It’s all kind of an enigma to me. I think though there is a possibility this was a Cavanagh import from Borsalino Im really just grasping at straws because the elements are so varied.I didn’t think the O.P.S. era and the John Cavanagh era overlapped. It was my understanding that “John Cavanagh” became “Cavanagh Hats” before the start of the Korean War. Now I’m off the the Cavanagh threads to see where I went wrong.
Very interesting hat, Joe.
Awesome.. I’m happy you got those. Apparently the auctioneer didn’t want my money. LOL. Im glad I didn’t end up bidding you upValentine the Hatter #5 is the first one that might fit me!

It was in an auction lot with a Leone Cappelli Panama and a not-horrible-looking Dorfman-Pacific.

Since I had to pay shipping I figured they could squeeze another couple of hats in there.

What appears to be a Royal Stetson “Musketeer” and an Ecuadorian Panama Hat Company Supernatural Milan.

$43 in bids to win them all.

Yeah it was acting weird. After bidding it would say “Your bid is Pending. Awaiting auctioneer to approve your bid”. Even though I already received “bidding approval email”. I think there may have been a couple other bidders in same boat as I think I saw the time extend too without my bids and without price going up. Then at end of auction. “Bid rejected”.Thanks Joe! I did see some weird things happening with the auctions. It was as if there was a bid and the time extended, but my bids did not increment any (I had max amounts set).
And apparently everything else too.I don’t usually buy these small ones, but the price was right.
