Thanks for helping me figure out what my jacket was based on and I suppose I did ask for an opinion of it, so you're certainly intitled to your opinion. But I have to say I'm a little surprised, I mean I know your a fan of adventure type gear and this jacket seems to atleast fall into that catagory if nothing else, yet you find it uninteresting even though it has a vintage military lean to it. I'd really rather have my RRL jacket rather than that original that you posted (BT), but then I'm obviously not as serious about the military stuff as you are...but I wouldn't call myself a fashion guy either, I just simply think it looks better.

But you should read and take in the context- I don't just speak out of the blue-
I'm responding to the comments of others. What seems to have upset you are my comments
in response to people who have not read your description of your garment and are saying that it's probably
an "M-41" paratroop jacket- when, it is highly unlikely and from the description, it obviously is not.
My interest was piqued, then there was the disappointing reveal.

You really seem to be going out of your way to twist things- try and relate your interpretation of things
to the facts.

I really shouldn't need to justify myself and I'm surprised that you're so upset about a stupid jacket.
Not to say that your jacket is any more stupid than any other jacket.

I am interested in precisely what I'm interested in, not what anyone else thinks I should be.
Why be upset? you do not know the scope of my interests and should not be surprised.
It's not like I stood up in class and shouted out "DougC- boring jacket" now, is it?
But you have offered the jacket up for inspection and it doesn't do anything for me.
The clincher is that it's RRL, that is the deciding factor for me.

I have responded to an ill-contrived thread starting post, which was pretending that something interesting had been discovered. Perhaps you should think about what you started and the way you did it, rather than questioning me.
Remember- "this", whatever it is, is about a jacket, not about a person, don't make it so.

I have no problem with you, or your jacket.

My comments on your likes was in regards to my having read several of your posts in the adventure gear thread and/or similar threads. Like I said, just surprised that's all, no biggy.

a lot of the RRL militaria is simply overpriced & uninteresting. Sometimes they do a lovely job of replicating a garment, but its usually far more expensive than finding an original example.
Also , the garments get names, labels & stencilled markings that have no real purpose.
When the helpful salesgal couldnt produce another $600 WWII jump trouser copy in my size she happily tried to offer me their current cargo pant but it was more of a typical M-51 trouser which you could find in an ArmyNavy store for $20....but in RRL its closer to $200.

But I can see why various stylists use RRL garments for fashion shoots. They do a good job at approximating a vintage garment's patina & allure.

thanks guys but I'm hip to what the RRL line is all about, I've only been buying it since the early '90s. I'm not here trying to defend it and I understand that many don't care for it too but I do like it for the most part. Now, that I think about it, I guess you could say I find almost all of it interesting to some degree. Was just trying to understand what the item of inspiration was for this jacket. And again, thanks everyone for helping me out with that.

I am a big fan of the Ralph Lauren military vintage inspired jackets. I like that they are high street and they are a bit of fun. some are downright awful mind you and I only ever buy the ones I do like from ebay or outlet stores which reduces their high tag.

Despite being in some cases perfect reproductions in their raw state, they are augmented with odd insignia or other adornments. I also like the fact that they produce them in non standard colours like black or blue.

black mountain pants (near enough)
black washed out M43 jacket
blue m51 jacket
near perfect M41 jacket embroidered on the back with key west

black nylon WEP USN flight jacket (too big for me and available for sale cheap)
perfect USAAF zip up cardigan sweater with small patch pocket.


I think thats quite a lot..

Well- I can't think of anything British that is remotely close, apart from the
1960 Pattern jacket, which has many obvious similarities. There was a Parka, with angled chest pockets but it really is a parka and not so much like the jacket this thread discusses.

It would be great if you could try and find an example for us to see, or help out in some way, now that you've dropped in and said no to the 1960 Pattern.

The 1960 Pattern is SO close to the RL jacket- I can't think of anything closer at all. The RL even seems to have the angled darts in the chest.

Hey BTW guys, I initially stated that my jacket has buttons covering a zipper, that was before I received it. There is no zipper on this jacket however. Despite the whole "zipper useage" section on the internal label...I suppose that's general "utility" jacket advice more than anything. Also, I didn't realise it has a huge internal pocket at the butt area, with a button; a pen pocket on the chest and a buttoning tab under the collar. I saw th M41 jackets last year, but wasnt that interested.
Missed the paratrooper gear. Could you post pix of the WWII paratroop copies?

The RRL paratrooper `42 pants that I saw on sunday were from the fall season. They were interesting approximations, but not quite worth $600.
I'd been hoping to see this from RRL, but a littl disappointed it was offered in such short supply. The quality is far better than the WWII reproduction vendors. But I wouldnt be surprised if Matt Deckard could do better at half the price for the same garments, but with a custom fit.

this is the odd thing. ww2 reenactors are only now realising the holy grail of M41 Jacket repros. RL crank them out without a backward glance, 'enhancing' the design on the way which reduces or removes their appeal for that purpose. I like them and recieve favourable comments on the black para jacket particularly. It has a kind of belstaff look to the untrained eye

I just bought this field jacket and wanted to share a couple of photos, but it isn't worth starting a new thread...so I'll just tack onto this one.

I was looking for an XL liner for my M-51 when I stumbled onto this jacket. It was listed as a "green military jacket" and I was the only bidder. Turned out to be an Austrian Army field jacket from the late seventies. There's a patch on the left shoulder that has been de-milled with a magic marker, but other than that, the jacket is excellent contition. It wears like a cross between an M-65 and an M-51... but with a timmer, longer cut.

The last photo is of some Austrian infantry wearing their field jackets and doing what all infantry does best...
