What do you use to shave?

It seems that men don't talk too much about shaving with one another so let me break the silent code: Do any of you guys have a shaving product or technique that you think tops all? Razors, creams, lotions, anything would help. I have not tried the old fashioned brush method. I have a horrible time shaving. I can't seem to shave without having my face feel like someone just sandpapered it. What do you use to shave?

I'm new but have been lurking for several weeks. I tried a new safety (tto) razor this morning for the first time. (I had been using a Gillette Fusion that was ok), But the old-style razor gave me to closest shave of my life! I was very careful and only let the weight of the razor press on my cheek, but it was still closer than any shave I'd ever had. In fact, i can still feel the shave hours later. Lol!

I wanted to buy an American made safety razor, but saw the razors made by Pilot. They are from India, but its a beauty. It is chrome and steel and has a nice weight.

I have an old style mug and soap thingy, but I really enjoy using Barbasol. My dad used this in the early 60s when I was a little kid watching him shave, so I guess that's why I use it.

I dont ever see me going back to the Fusion or disposable razors again. I'm currently searching around the house for my dad's old TTO razor, but no luck so far. Anyway, thanks for the ideas you folks gave me in this group!

Ok, I have now learned that the difference between Barbasol shaving cream from a can and really nice shave soap in a dish is like night and day. I dont see me ever using aerosol shave cream again.

Well, my order finally came in.

I bought a Parker safety razor (never did find my dad's old Gillette).
I bought some Caswell-Massey 1752 almond soap in a little wooden bowl.
And I bought a bottle of cheap Clubman Pinaud aftershave.

Best shave of my life!!! =) And I smell like an old time barber shop now. Lol!

My Sis just brought me a flea market find. She spent 2 dollars for a Gillette Fat Boy! Four and a half months and I'll try it out.

Shaving creme...Neutrogena Shaving Cream. Nice, thin, smooth shaves without the can.

Razor...presently using a Gillette Fusion but am going to start working my straight razor again next month. I had some proficiency with it a few years ago but then the schedule picked up and I defaulted to the faster, more familiar disposable with the crunch time. It's time to get back to the basics again.

At times my beard is so thick it feels like I need a chainsaw! But I do use a twin blade razor. I have not used a shaving cream for many years, I use a soap, lather it and then shave. Schick razors seem to work great for me. Less work and as easy as is can get.

I hate to play the devil's advocate here, but double-edged razors leave much to be desired for me. I've tried several different razor and blade combos, but the flimsy, flexible properties of all DE blades just doesn't work on with my beard growth. Oh, how I wish I had steady enough hands to use a straight razor (and the will to continue practicing through multiple accidental lacerations!).

But, alas! I discovered a razor so perfect, if I were older, I could have sworn they designed it for me. Behold, the Gem Micromatic!

The thick, sturdy construction of single edge blades helps me a lot when I have two or more days worth of stubble to shave off. The micromatic is a very aggressive razor, so in practiced hands it glides right through the thickest and longest of beard growth like a knife through butter. I even use it to trim the nape of my neck in-between haircuts

My shave is 2/3 Gillette: 1940s safety razor and a can of their cream. Add Russian platinum-plated DE blades from Astra (got a big box of them to last a few years). Great shave: no 5 o'clock shadow just like the old ads say.

And as a double bonus you can use it to clean around mullions after you've repainted. I do agree about the rigid blade. I have a couple Gems and EverReadys that give me a straight razor shave. I'm just trying to find a little higher quality single edge blade.

Nothing special razor wise just a wilkinson sword protector but the thing that I have found gives the best shave is somersets shaving oil instead of foam. Not the sensitive or beard ones just the original with the orange writing.

D.R. Harris Sandalwood & Marlborough aftershaves (Sandalwood in winter because it's an oil).
D.R. Harris Marlborough shave soap, someone named Jagger brush, and a Merkur double edged safety razor.
The soap shown is actually one I've purchased recently, when the current one runs out. I Shave every day and I've still got 1/4 of the current soap left, which is from Dec 2009!

Some if not all of the World Series games on ESPN radio had commercials for Barbasol. I kinda liked that, and I'm sure my maternal grandfather listened to some Cardinals World Series games on radio in his time (1930s.) Though I had no rooting interest this year.
Seems like a lot of ad expense for something that's sold at Dollar Tree... and is only 90-some-cents at Wal-Mart. But then again, who listens to BASEBALL on the RADIO anymore? Heck, the L.A. station I was trying to listen to, skipped some of the playoffs and one WS game in favor of college football and its pre-pre-pre-game sports talk.

I use a vintage double edge safety razor (one of several) with a boar bristle shaving brush and shaving soap. Antique shops are good places to find the razors, just be sure to boil and sanitize them before using. I often take the double edge into the shower and shave by touch there. One day I'm going to get myself a good badger hair brush and something better than a Tupperware cup to hold the soap!
