What do you think these tie widths are?

I'm almost about to buy a new necktie. I'm a fan of some '60s sartorial aesthetics, but more subtle tie widths are what I'm after, as I don't think the particularly narrow ties will do it for me (see pictures of the current TV show Mad Men for a fast example of what I mean). I also want something in a solid dark navy color. Looking at these two pictures below, Sean Connery (Dr. No) and Alain Delon (Le Samourai) appear to be wearing ties that are a bit on the wide side for the 1960s, maybe Delon's wider than Connery's. What do you think these are, 3, 3 1/4, or 3 1/2 inch maybe?

The ties I wear are modern 3 3/4 to 4 inch ties, so I know these pictured are supposed to be narrower on the wide part. Also, is there a good place to get modern-made ties that "taper" like vintage ties do? Modern ties are a little too straight-sided for this look in general. I'm thinking Indy Magnoli, but I checked his custom-made ties page, and I didn't see how I could specify width and length (I have in mind 54 or 55 inches). Thanks!

I would guess that they are in the range of 2-3/4 to 3 inches wide, respectively. Just a guess, though.

I was interested in some Magnoli ties but was concerned about the length - I emailed him and he got back to me right away with the dimensions.

If you don't mind paying a premium for quality, you might look at Mountain & Sackett - their hand made ties are fantastic quality, and the styles usually come in a choice of widths, e.g. these two blue wool ties come either 2-3/4" or 3-1/2" wide:

Hard to tell from the photos, but they appear to be around 2 1/4"-2 1/2".

That would be my guesstimate as well.

I'd say 2-3/4 inches.

(a) Looks about the same as ties I have that are that width.

(b) Waistbands on trousers are fairly consistent at 1-1/2"; using that as a reference and measuring on the photo, Connery's tie would come out to be 2.75".

I like that tie width also, but searching on eBay, it's been hard to find them with patterns and colors that I can stand.

Thanks for the posts everyone. I may not go under 3 inches personally, as I wear 3 3/4 or 4 inch ties, and I don't want to make such a drastic jump from what's consistent for me. Does anyone have experience with Indy Magnoli's custom tie service? What could you tell me about it before I might try it?

Also, is there any idea as to what these sort of ties are? By that, I mean what fabric am I looking at? I'm not sure if they're knit, so grenadine?

Don't overthink it. Why don't you just search ebay and buy some vintage blue ties? Ties are really the cheapest item in the vintage wardrobe and it's not bad to have options. Buy silk, wool or rayon. Or buy two or three-why not?

I agree with the approx 2-inch wide mark. I've seen some ties which are approaching four inches wide that would almost look like cravats. Those ties there look much thinner. Certainly not three inches. More two-to-two and a half.
