What do you think of the Indiana Jones hats?

I do have a technical question... I recently had the hat recrushed/blocked at Byrnie Utz, and while we were discussing the Indy-style fedora for a bit, he claimed that my hat was taller than the Indy...so the question is, when you measure the crown height, are you measuring it unbashed? or is it say, from brim to highest point of the bash? I've heard the Indy crown being 5.5"; and I measure mine at pretty close to that, but measured with the bash. (Interestingly, I don't see how the crown could be any shorter, and still have the dent look right... my head almost touches the dent underside when I'm wearing it).

So, How is the crown height measured?

Crown measurements, especially with IJ hats, are relevent by either method. The 5.5" should be the open crowned, unbashed height. The big debate comes in when talking about what the front and back height should be after bashing. Me, I don't give a hooey, as long as it looks nice. However, I do know that many people think the dent is supposed to be deeper than it really is on screen. Plus, since people have different head shapes and sizes, what works on Harrison Ford may not work on other people. In short, though, if your hat measures 5.5" with the bash in, then Mr. Utz is correct. Also, he makes great potato chips. lol

By the way... love the avatar!

What if you look like a dork in a high crown hat like the Indy? Then your only recourse is to have one custom made to your crown height specs., but then it wouldn't really be an Indy anymore, would it? My feeling is, so what? I have to be happy with the hat and even though I like the Indy style, I am not going to wear an original Indy if it makes me look dorky. This may be Indy heresy but it is either that or no Indy at all.

Is it possible...

...there are more than two IJ hats?

I was at a hat store in Norfolk a couple of weeks ago, and a salesman I'm friendly with showed me an official IJ hat. It was in a logo box, and the liner was maroon, with gold trim, also with IJ logo. Bill told me it was beaver and $500. The store in question is competitive on prices, and the hat had a very rich feel.

As far as the IJ hat phenomenon, I have mixed views. As someone who wore a fedora before the movie, I had to now go through: "Hey Indiana Jones".

You're right, Donato, no use looking dorky. Wear what works for you and what you feel comfortable in. As for myself, I have a big head, so the IJ looks okay on my. For me, a thin brim and short crown looks dorky...KC

Federation Akubra

Here's a few shots of my Federation Akubra from Hatsdirect. I did the basic form and then sat down and watched raiders on my pc and would pause the film when a particularly good scene would show off the hat. From that, I did some more adjustments —it still think it looks more like a last crusade hat though. I know it maybe sounds weird, but it was fun.

My wife has a 1984 (made by John B. Stetson, wool). It was given by Harrison Ford to one of the bus drivers for the making of the movie. It's a LARGE, and I wear a MEDIUM. Now, we all know "wool hats shrink." But this one is 23 years old, and it still is too big for my head. It looks pretty good on her, though. :)

I've seen a few of these, but not another with a light brown ribbon.

Here's the documentation (such as it is). It was purchased in an antique mall in Oxford/Anniston, Alabama.

You might not know it from this picture, but she loves this hat, and enjoys wearing it more than any other she has. (Picture was taken outside the HATCO Outlet in Garland, Texas. She was waiting for me while I took a picture of the factory, next door.)

I have one with the same label on the inside, but with the dark brown band. I bought mine at a Preslar's Western Shop in a mall around 1985. They had the 'original' with the dark brown band, and the one you show with a tan band. -If I'm not crazy, I think they also offered a black one!
I also have another one from 1989 that has a small 'art deco-ish' Indy emblem with a prop plane on the inside from the LC movie. The theater I saw it in wheeled out a huge souvenier cart when the movie let out!
The first one is as stiff as cardboard, completely unwearable. The second one is also wool, but not as stiff. I don't believe either one has the dimensional brim though.

You can if you still want. ;)

There are many academic digs that need volunteers with loads of listings on the website of the Archaeological Institute of America, and it's a very nice way to spend a vacation. I was at one and I would never hesitate to join another one again.

Good point... I may well give that a go at some future point...

I have to say I do like this one.

<a href="http://imageshack.us"><img src="http://img259.imageshack.us/img259/92/newox3.jpg" border="0" alt=" Adventurebilt "/></a>

Steve was trying to push the studio back to the tight pinch of the Raiders' fedora but the costume designer was insistent on relaxing the pinch. I think that was a good choice. If you do order from Steve, he will shape it to request (tight pinch, relaxed pinch, etc) as well as alter dimension such as the brim width, crown height, etc. Sizes proportional to one's individual facial features can really make or break the hat.

Steve is great to deal with, he made my first Adventurebilt just as I as him to.
I can only hope that the crystal skull fedora will be as nice as the one I already have.:D
