Timeras said:I do have a technical question... I recently had the hat recrushed/blocked at Byrnie Utz, and while we were discussing the Indy-style fedora for a bit, he claimed that my hat was taller than the Indy...so the question is, when you measure the crown height, are you measuring it unbashed? or is it say, from brim to highest point of the bash? I've heard the Indy crown being 5.5"; and I measure mine at pretty close to that, but measured with the bash. (Interestingly, I don't see how the crown could be any shorter, and still have the dent look right... my head almost touches the dent underside when I'm wearing it).
So, How is the crown height measured?
Not-Bogart13 said:Crown measurements, especially with IJ hats, are relevent by either method. The 5.5" should be the open crowned, unbashed height. The big debate comes in when talking about what the front and back height should be after bashing. Me, I don't give a hooey, as long as it looks nice. However, I do know that many people think the dent is supposed to be deeper than it really is on screen. Plus, since people have different head shapes and sizes, what works on Harrison Ford may not work on other people. In short, though, if your hat measures 5.5" with the bash in, then Mr. Utz is correct. Also, he makes great potato chips. lol
By the way... love the avatar!
J.T.Marcus said:My wife has a 1984 (made by John B. Stetson, wool). It was given by Harrison Ford to one of the bus drivers for the making of the movie. It's a LARGE, and I wear a MEDIUM. Now, we all know "wool hats shrink." But this one is 23 years old, and it still is too big for my head. It looks pretty good on her, though.

American Graffiti is actually set in 1962.Kaosharper1 said:Don't forget American Graffiti's contribution to reviving the 50s.

I've seen a few of these, but not another with a light brown ribbon.
Here's the documentation (such as it is). It was purchased in an antique mall in Oxford/Anniston, Alabama.
You might not know it from this picture, but she loves this hat, and enjoys wearing it more than any other she has. (Picture was taken outside the HATCO Outlet in Garland, Texas. She was waiting for me while I took a picture of the factory, next door.)

There are many academic digs that need volunteers with loads of listings on the website of the Archaeological Institute of America, and it's a very nice way to spend a vacation. I was at one and I would never hesitate to join another one again.

If you do order from Steve, he will shape it to request (tight pinch, relaxed pinch, etc) as well as alter dimension such as the brim width, crown height, etc. Sizes proportional to one's individual facial features can really make or break the hat.
