This makes me wonder about Australia. Is there as much regional variation in Australian accents as there is in the US? I know there is considerable variation in Canada, since that country has a history similar to the US in terms of immigration and settlement.
Can you Aussies tell where a person is from just by his speech?

It's much harder with Australians. We tend to have three different accent groups which reflect background and education.

*Country folks (Think Steve Irwin)
*Average folks (Think Nicole Kidman)
*Upper class folks (Think Geoffrey Rush)

There is a little bit of difference from state to state. Especially in Queensland I think. But for the most part one would find it difficult to tell us apart. There is some regional colloquial language but that rarely comes up.

Charlie, when I lived in Sydney, I always got the impression there's a difference the further you go up the east coast. Start somewhere like Melbourne where the accent (to a Kiwi's ears at least is pretty soft) and head on round to the east coast and up and it seems to get stronger the further you go. Get up to Cairns and round there and it seems stronger and more of a drawl.

As you say, it's probably mostly socio-economic background which is the biggie in accent. Same with NZ for that matter.
