I had a screwdriver. Then my roommate brought home some wine and I sampled a glass. It was a Texas table red called "Sweet Rodeo Red" by Los Pinos Ranch Vineyards. Then I had Blue Moon Belgian ale.

It certainly adds to the experience. The local cinema had the brilliant idea of converting two of the smaller, older upstairs theatres into a special 'gold class', with attached bar and cafe, with meals available from a nearby restaurant. Small cocktail menu, but the lowest price in town at $13.50. They did a decent job of it, unlike one of the local public houses where I ordered a martini and it arrived tasting strongly of lemon and slightly fizzy.

Sounds like quite the experience.
A fizzy martini? Someone is clearly shaking and not stirring. They probably used lemon flavored gin as well. :eusa_doh:

Mr. Fish, please explain further about premium brands of tonic. I'm using Schweppes 99% of the time and don't know about better brands.

Stirrings, Fentimans, Fevertree, and my favorite Q Tonic. All these I prefer to the big brands of tonic because they are less sweet and taste a bit more bitter. You can see the difference and feel it over your tongue. They don't get all foamy as you pour or as it passes your palate.
If I find myself somewhere in need of a G&T with only these big brand or store tonics, I'll mix the tonic with a 1/3 seltzer to cut the sweetness.
After finding Q at Kegworks first, I see it just about everywhere now along with Stirrings. Fentimans tonic I've only seen online, quite a few stores carry some of their line,,, but not their tonic. Fevertree was carried by Wholefoods, but not the one by me anymore because it's not "local"- so they carry only Q (it's made in Brooklyn).:eusa_doh:

As always, Mr. Fish, I am in your debt. All four of these brands are news to me. With this list in hand, I must shop some speciality stores.

Last night, in a respectable casino, probably the worst cocktails I've ever experienced!

The "Cosmopolitan's" were served in unchilled glasses, with vodka from the shelf, rather than the freezer, and ended up a very strange "plastic" pink colour.

The "Margarita's" were served in a glass too large for the contents. The drink didn't even half fill the glass, and the salt was smeared all around the outside of the glass, and down the stem!

Suffice to say, that I didn't accept them, and refused to pay. The response I received from the barman (a term not befitting him, I might add), was that, "we usually make them like that, what do you want me to do?". My response, "well, for a start it would help if you remembered who's the customer here!".

I settled for a cold beer (bottled, I might add!), and took comfort in the fact that I went home, relieving them of cash from the Roulette table!

Rant over.....

You know better than to drink in Casino bars Dan. :pThey just want you drunk so you spend money. Quality has nothing to do with it.:eusa_doh:
I am glad you took them for some dough though. :D

We had a cast party tonight, so there was a bit of steam to blow. I learned that I rather like southern comfort. I also confirmed my belief that I do not like vodka, especially mixed with things that don't taste good in the first place, in this case, rather watery unpleasant lemonade.

James,

True enough, but I've never had that kind of treatment in Vegas............perhaps I should've stayed at the Club!

Danny O,
I'm disheartened hearing about your treatment and the state of those 'cocktails.' Why, certainly you should have stayed at the Club. Or, perhaps I'm just saying that because I was lonely drinking all by myself there! :(

My mixed drink - casino bar experience is mostly Las Vegas and I have found that 9 times out of 10 the level of competency was pretty high. As a matter of fact the bartender if not too busy would often come by and ask about your drink and then make suggestions. If you liked Manhattans they might suggest trying a different whiskey. I have even had them make a free drink and bring small samples to the group I was with so we could try what he was talking about. At other places i might stick with beer and have found that even the midlevel casinos have made an effort to put at least one good import or microbrew on tap at one of the bars.

BD,

It wasn't until I complained, that everyone around the bar began to study their drinks more closely! A young lady stood next to me said, "If I'd been served those, I'd return them too!".

My apologies, I'd forgotten to set the answer machine, and didn't realise you'd called? If I'd known you were on your way, I would've stayed there! I take it you'll be there this Friday?
