What can I wear with this?

I know this is a formal coat but is there anything else you can wear it with? How casual can it be worn? Witha button down shirt and slacks? Or a business casual type? I am completely stupid to any kind of faux pas so how far can this go?

I have a single-breasted brown leather coat a little like this - it's bit more rock, with exaggerated sleeves, cuff-links - and I tend to reserve it for evening/formal events, and dress accordingly.

It's the Magnoli replica of the tenth Doctor Who's coat (David Tennant era). I don't know that many people will spot that now, though - mostly only fans. I always loved it, though the only way to do it is to get one made from the correct upholstery fabric. It'll cost you, but half the beauty of that coat was its magnificent drape. I can't imagine wearing it with jeans, though I think I could see it working with perhaps khakis and a shirt or something along those lines - the dreaded "business casual".

I always thought my coat had a little bit of the Who about it - its the Art-Deco touches on the cuffs - but never let it worry me. If it looks good, and you wear it with confidence, then do it!

Great jacket!
But the moment I saw it, I knew it was the Doctor's coat (but I'm a fan). It's like buying an RAF greatcoat (or the excellent copy that's available in the lighter fabric) and going for the Captain Jack look (it's very cool and totally works for him too).
But back in the real world, Doctor Who has surpassed cult TV status and the general public is pretty much universally aware of him - and there's never a Perception Filter when you need one! And the Tenth Doctor is returning in September too - and maybe in this jacket? So it's a tricky look to pull off ... but then again, even something like a big old western style Duster jacket is hard for someone like me to wear well with my 5'8" and regular frame. I love them, but they don't suit me.
So if you've got the height and build for it and can pull it off, I'd say wear what makes you feel good and the masses be damned.
But I wouldn't wear it with a suit jacket. It'll always need a collared shirt at least and I'd say tone it down with khakis of various colours and a vest ... to put your own stamp on the look.

This is said by a member of a forum known to be inhabited by people who wear: boater hats, fleece Irvin jackets, spectator shoes, spear point collars etc..

If you want to wear the Doctor's coat - go for it, just remember that you have to "own" the look and accept the odd looks you'll get. I'd skip wearing the brown pin-striped suit with it though.

The nicest long coat I ever did see was in that rather obscure version of "Biggles: Adventures In Time". A Saturday matinee kind of film from, hmm, 1986? - very well cast (it even had Peter Cushing in it!) and well acted and quite well made - just a silly romp with a dreadful musical score.
But the long coats were amazing. They had sheepskin collars a la RFC of the time ... would love to know where they came from .... Now one of those I would go for! Never mind the "Where'd you leave your TARDIS mate?" comments ... (we all get the unimaginative comments in our wartime jackets. Why should Who fans be exempt?!) - I'd take the odd comment in a Biggles coat!

If the coat is not made of leather, I'd go all cowboy with it. Boots, jeans, and stuff. Treat it like a duster. Well, I don't much care for Dr Who, anyway...

It was an amazing bargain: a Paul Smith runway number that was knocked down from a grand to £350, simply because it was a very small 36 and nobody who'd tried it on to that point could wear it comfortably. It's a thin-jumper-and-no-more number, but also a great guide as to whether or not I'm putting on weight. :eeek:
I had one boss make a Dr Who comment about it when I was wearing it out a works night - though he meant in a good way (I think).

There'll always be some wise-ass making some sort of comment. I expect someone to say "Where'd you park your Spitfire, mate? Hur Hur .." when I wear my Irvin to the pub - it's happened enough... They're always so original in their comments. Jeez.
Thankfully now, Who is now cool and well made and not the embarrassment it became in the 1980s ... not that you need to worry in my opinion. It's a cool coat.

How can such coats be a "jacket"? They are twice or three times as long as a true jacket.
