I don't think anyone has mentioned the theme to 'Dad's Army'...?

Performed and written in the style of 1940s wartime songs, 'Who Do You Think You are Kidding Mr. Hitler?' was recorded specially for the show by music-hall entertainer and famous 1940s wartime singer Bud Flanagan, as a special favour to the show's creators. He died less than a year after he finished and it was his last recorded song.

That theme was written by Paul Anka, who I'm certain was very sad to see the royalty checks stop rolling in after Johnny ultimately retired.

You're right, and here's the original version of the song. I find it interesting that it was first released on Disney's Buena Vista label.

Hollywood: A Celebration of the American Silent Film
I've always loved the theme song of this documentary series from 1980.

The old Tonight Show theme brings me back to struggling to stay awake to see the monologue before being shuffled off to bed. The opening and closing of All In the Family and The Waltons theme are all highly nostalgic for me.

Me too. It's amazing how often I think of him. In one sense, he was practically family because he was virtually in my home several times a week for nearly twenty-five years. I was born a nightowl and began watching him when school was out at about age thirteen and everyone else in the house had gone to bed. Once I became an adult, I seldom missed a show when I was home. His combination of style, wit, and manners will never be topped by any talkshow host. His humor could be pointed, but he was never mean-spirited like Leno and Letterman routinely are. It's just one of the reasons I can't stand to watch either of them. He was also always respectful to his guests and made them, instead of himself, the center of attention.

Man, I miss Johnny Carson. :(

Johnny was one of a kind. If ever there was a someone who was irreplaceable, it was him. Yes, there is a 'Tonight Show,' but he was 'The Tonight Show' in my eyes.

I totally agree though many people today do not realize that Steve Allen was the very first host of The Tonight Show. Johnny was the third host who succeeded Jack Paar in 1962 after the latter had walked off the show.
