Please pardon the thread necromancy but I came across this quote and remembered this thread so thought I would add it.

"I can't say hats are as precious to paleontologists as they are to Texans, but they can be something of a signature, or talisman... Excavations are never, ever done in the shade. Where there is erosion and exposure, there is inevitable sun, and a hat, which is absolutely necessary, can gather memories and significance." - Jack Horner, from his book "How to Build a Dinosaur: Extinction Doesn't Have to Be Forever"

Me, too...

Prompted by GHT's quote from Martha Sliter, from the web:

ENJOYING HAT QUOTES
The following quotes come from so many different sources, I don't always know who gets the credit. In any case, all will get a chuckle:
"Wearing a hat is like having a baby or a puppy; everyone stops to coo and talk about it." (Louise Green)
"Fashion was not only supposed to make women beautiful, but to reassure them, to give them confidence, to allow them to come to terms with themselves." (Yves St. Laurent)

"Life is like a new hat. You don't know if it suits you if you keep trying it on in front of your own mirror." Shirley McLaine.

"A hat is a flag, a shield, a bit of armor, and the badge of femininity. A hat is the difference between wearing clothes and wearing a costume; it's the difference between being dressed and being dressed up; it's the difference between looking adequate and looking your best. A hat is to be stylish in, to glow under, to flirt beneath, to make all others seem jealous over, and to make all men feel masculine about. A piece of magic is a hat." (Martha Sliter)

"Fashion is a kind of communication. It's a language without words. A great hat speaks for itself."

"Whenever you wear your hat, your day will be special." (Margo Nickel, www.margonickel.com).
A naked Adam may have fallen upon an equally naked Eve without the need of props. But in this day of curiously unerotic sexual explicitness and demystifying psychological close-ups, we are in desperate need of the feminine wiles that once characterized style icons like Marlene Dietrich, Babe Paley, and Jackie O. (I think a hat qualifies, Ladies...)
"Women are vain. They think they look better in hats--if they have any sense." (94-year-old Louisa Hagood).
"Luxurious, flirty and at times a bit sexy. We're out to prove a great hat can change your day." (Plaza Suite hats)
The fashionable female hat is nothing, after all, but a caprice. Let those who pay for it--fifty dollars, more or less--grumble about the cost. We, as spectators, shall be satisfied if it prove an ornament. (Harper's Weekly, 1857)
Saying you don't look good in a hat is like saying you don't look good in shoes!
Wearing a hat versus not wearing a hat is the difference between looking adequate and looking your best. (Martha Sliter)
It isn't what I do, but how I do it. It isn't what I say, but how I say it, and how I look when I do it and say it. (Mae West)
The rush of power to the head is not as becoming as a new hat. (Helen Van Slyke)
We just know inside that we're queens. And these are the crowns we wear. (Felecia McMillan)
You can flirt with a fan in your hand. You can flirt holding a cigarette, too. But a woman can really flirt with a hat. (Dolores Foster)
I myself have 12 hats, and each one represents a different personality. Why just be yourself? (Margaret Atwood)
If a woman rebels against high heeled shoes, she should take care to do it in a very smart hat. (George Bernard Shaw)
So many hats and only one head!
Beautify America. Wear a hat!
Women who love hats don't get jealous. It makes them happy to see a hat that looks good on someone else. Women who wear hats know who they are.
There's just something special about a woman in a hat. (Betmar Philosophy)
"Why do you always wear a hat?" " 'Cause it fits my head." (Robert Redford, in "The Horse Whisperer")
Women wearing hats are at once sophisticated and whimsical....Their faces are younger and softer. They carry themselves differently, daintily, like deer. Their voices flutter a bit...even when they are talking about things like money and power and work, even when it's clear they're very much in charge of their lives." (from "O" Magazine).
The human head is a constantly moving and turning pedestal...with the hat a sculpture. (Eia Millinery design)
With the right hat, nothing else matters. (LaPaloma Hats)
Leave everyone wondering which is the more interesting piece of work...you or your hat.
...For when a woman puts on a hat, A transformation oft takes place: Self-confidence and self-respect, Show in the lady's face. She accents her femininity; She stands tall, with shoulders back; Even when her derriere, Is clothed in jeans or slacks.
I think tomorrow is a say-something-hat day. (Vida Boheme)
Breathes a woman with soul so dead that never to herself hath said, "I need another hat to adorn my head."
A hat is a shameless flatterer, calling attention to an escaping curl, a tawny braid, a sprinkling of freckles over a pert nose, directing the eye to what is most unique about a face. Its curves emphasize a shining pair of eyes, a lofty forehead; its deep brim accentuates the pale tint of a cheek, creates an aura of prettiness, suggests a mystery that awakens curiosity in the onlooker. (Jeanine Larmoth)
"Few women have ever been able to resist the temptation to try on a hat and discover in the mirror a person they never suspected was there. A hat alters the image we have of ourselves, and the image others see as well. For the hours we wear it, it brings out different dimension in our personality, much as a costume aids an actress in her role."
The right hat may also enliven our imagination of the past....an old-fashioned cloche, a picture hat, or a toque trimmed with a pouf of polka-dotted veiling is just enough to make us feel as if we were living in another, romantic age.
A veil can bring on more shenanigans than forgetting your silk underpants.
When my Mother first dressed me in a hat as if I were a Lady, I owned the title.
Wearing hats has become like fine art for me. (Tina Brown)
"Women who wear hats intimidate me the most. It wasn't so bad when everyone wore a hat, but today, the style is limited only to the few, the proud...the tall. I think that's the key word here. Hats were never meant to be worn by women who can stand up under overhead bins on airplanes and not bash their heads in.
There was a time when I joined the Easter Parade wearing a hat. One year, it was a dazzler with a wide brim that could have offered shade to Brazil. I felt like Grace Kelly in it until I saw myself in a snapshot. I looked like the Flying Nun in search of a runway. I never wore it again.
Throughout the years, I have mentally put together a profile of women who can wear hats. Generally, they are women of great confidence. When they visit someone in the hospital, they park their car in the tow away zone. It is always there when they return for it. Their hair is always long enough on the sides to pull back and secure without little pieces standing out over the ears like Howdy Doody. They love blueberries, and they never stain their teeth.
They have two children: a boy and a girl, who are not allowed to watch television. Their husbands recite them poetry that doesn't rhyme. They're the first to wear white shoes in the spring. The family dog wears braces for an overbite.
I know I am generalizing, but I'm bitter. In my heart, I know there is much to admire about a woman wearing a hat who knows that she attracts the attention of every eye around her and can still walk like a person. I used to give speeches, and I'd be so self-conscious that I'd walk to the podium as though I were marching into Poland.
Today the hat wearers will be out in force: those who are comfortable in them, and those who would not feel more conspicuous if two wombats were mating on their head.
I have a hat. It is graceful and feminine and has a wide brim with a red ribbon around the band. It gives me a certain dignity, as if I were attending a state funeral or something. People are generous in their compliments. Someday I may get up enough courage to wear it, instead of carrying it." From "Women Who Wear Hats Stand Heads Above the Rest" (by Irma Bombeck)
"Luxurious, flirty, and, at times, a bit sexy. We're out to prove a great hat can change your day." Plaza Suite, New York.
"Go Ahead and Bloom"--A Philosophy
"When you wear a hat, it is like medicine for the soul. The hat is the expression of who you are as a women in every moment! The hat is your dreams of who you can be. It facilitates the different parts of who you are: With the wave of the hat, voila! You are mysterious...no, you are sexy...now proper...now playful.

You cannot hide in a hat; you will be noticed, especially by men. To men, you become a lady when you don a hat--one who they rush to open doors for. To women, you become an inspiration, reminding them that they have a closet full of hats they have not had the courage to wear.

When you wear a hat, you become the dream that started when the hat was conceived. The original energy that was put into the hat doesn't die; it only changes forms and owners. The dream doesn't die; it is passed on, sometimes from generation to generation.

And when you see a women in a hat in the next car on the freeway, the dream grows. We as women acknowledge each other's growth. It is the symbol of the feminine which is so needed for us and our earth to heal. So let's share this gift with as many as we wish to share such a vision. For...this is how you will 'Go Ahead and Bloom.' "

I am curious if anyone has any favorite quotations about hats, specifically. I will start off with a ridiculous and a sublime.

"Oh, this is the worst lookin' hat I ever saw. You buy a hat like this I bet you get a free bowl of soup. Oh, it looks good on you though!"

Al Czervik (Rodney Dangerfield), Caddyshack

"There are very few moments in a man's existence when he
experiences so much ludicrous distress, or meets with so little
charitable commiseration, as when he is in pursuit of his own hat."

Charles Dickens, The Pickwick Papers

I look forward to hearing what yours are - it seems a potentially rich field.

"It doesn't matter whether or not you have a head, you must wear the right sort of hat" - Kazantzakis
I was watching a movie on the hat channel today and a guy said "...his life won't be worth last year's straw hat!"

This isn't about a hat, but a hat part! I always got a kick out of Rooster Cogburn (John Wayne, True Grit), when he was threatening a wounded man about his leg and getting back to Fort Smith. "By that time, that leg of yours'll be swelled up tighter'en Dick's hatband."

I wish I had this quote at hand but I dont. I think its from Maverick, where James Garner is talking about the meanings of the different angles you wear your hat. Anyone know it?

James Garner did something similar in Murphy's Romance...

Years later I know, but..... I remember seeing the very scene - I think it was indeed Murphy's Romance. I saw the film on television years back, in the mid eighties when we still only had the four channels in the UK, and so you often ended up watching something you wouldn't otherwise have chosen....

The line about hats always stuck with me (and got repeated on occasion in my university years, as I recall). This may not be exactly word for word as it's been over 35 years, but it ran something along these lines:

The father, and the young son - are trying on hats and looking in a mirror to see what looks good. Murphy speaks authoritatively, and as he says this, as I remember it demonstrates with either his own hat or actually I think by moving the hat on the young son's head. The father copies.

"How you wear your hat says a lot about a man. Wear it pushed back on your head, you're easy you've got all day. Wear it cocked to one side - you're looking for either a fight or a young lady, whichever comes first. Wear it down low at the front, and everybody better get out of your way."

At this point, father and son both push the brim, currently down over theirs eyes, up and back so their hats sit high on the backs of their heads.

I wish I could remember it word for word, but that's the thrust of it. Scene must have stuck with me as I remember it all these years later - I can't have been more than twelve or thirteen when I saw it on TV. If it ever had a UK cinema release, it would have hit UK TV around 1987, as in those days two years from cinema screen to TV was a norm. If it didn't get a UK release (I don't recall; at that point in time, the nearest cinemas to us were all in Belfast, and in those days we didn't go into town all that much; the cinema was usually a twice-yearly treat), then it might have been earlier.
