Sam Cook's "A Change Is Going To Come". That one is magical.

In keeping with my mood today, I first heard “Espérame En El Cielo” on a Spanish Harlem Orchestra record, “Across 110th Street”. Unfortunately I could not find a link that would fully play the song. You can buy the record here:
http://www.amazon.com/Across-110th-Street-Ruben-Blades/dp/B00029RSY0

And see a live snippet here:

The song apparently is about two lovers, and one tells the other to “wait for me in the clouds, if you pass first”. That was enough for me. The rendition that Spanish Harlem does is incredible.

Not long afterward I picked up Bobby Valentin’s version. Bobby has always been one of my favorites, I don’t know why I hadn’t picked up the album that it was on sooner (Rey Del Bajo). It’s killer.

In looking for links to display the song, I find that it was not a song written in the 60’s or 70’s, but one that was much older. I started clicking on links and I really couldn’t find a bad rendition of it. It’s an incredible song.

Berliners dancing it up

Snippets from Walther Ruttmann's amazing 1927 documentary Berlin, Sinfonie der Großstadt.
Bernard Etté's band appears as we hear their 1928 recording Pork and Beans, an excellent hot opus.

I don't know why, but I've been in a classic country mood lately.

78s to swear to never again eat anything with any onion in it by --

First off, a new addition to the library courtesy of the local Salvation Army, it's Chick Bullock and his Levee Loungers in 1937 with "A Sailboat In The Mooonlight." One of Chick's last records in his long association with the American Record Corporation, and he hasn't lost a bit of it. For some reason this disc showed up in a box full of cracked early fifties Columbias and RCA Victors, and it begged me to rescue it -- and for a buck, why not?

Next up, back to 1931 with Julia Gerity and Her Orchestra and the prototypical Julia Gerity record, "Sittin' On A Rubbish Can." The band is actually Snooks Friedman and his Memphis Ramblers in disguise, but it's impossible to ever to disguise Ms. Gerity as she bellows out the vocal like Sid Garry in drag.

Today on my drive in it was more big band music, especially the amazing Malibu by Benny Carter--this piece for me sums up the Film Noir vibe. Also listened to Tommy Dorsey's verison of "On the Sunny Side of the Street"--grab your coat and DON'T FORGET YOUR HAT!

Many of the early James Bond soundtracks were superbly crafted with a series of themes that could be used to support the situation on the screen.
The soundtrack for From Russia with Love is excellent I also like Diamonds Are Forever and You Only Live Twice a lot.

If you can find it, there was a great album called "James Bond and his Sextet"--jazz impressions of James Bond themes. Seriously good music to drink a martini to.

Another stunning CD is called "Basie Meets Bond" where Count Basie works his magic on some great Bond music.

Got to find that one, John--sounds great. My other guilty pleasure is a CD called "Swingin' with the Grateful Dead"--big band verion of Truckin? Sugar Magnolia as a jump tune? Believe it or not, it works!

Ray Barretto also did a record called “Señor 007”. It’s all early James Bond music. As far as James Bond records go, it’s good. But Ray Barretto has made so many records that are absolute classics, that Señor 007 would be one of the last ones I’d buy (if you wanted to explore Ray Barretto).

Speaking of kitschy themes redone, here is Bobby Valentin doing the Batman theme. I never really listen to this.

However, he also did a song called "Use it before you lose it", where he sort of barrowed the theme in the chorus, and I can't get enough of that tune. I've been listening to it for ten years.

Both tunes were obviously recorded in the 60’s.
