No Critiques is probably the only song written about a conversation between a peacock and a crocodile. From what I’ve been told, the peacock tells the crocodile that he’s a “horror” to look at. The croc answers back that the peacock is the king of the birds and is beautiful, but if he stopped to look at his own feet, he’d be ashamed. That goes into the chorus, which says “Don’t criticize friend without looking at yourself first”. The rest of the lyrics are improvised by whoever is singing.


The Eddie Palmieri version was recorded in 1963 and had Manny Oquendo on timbales (or in the case of the actual tune, bongos) and Barry Rodgers on trombone. 12 years later Manny started his own group and rerecorded it. Barry was on that recording as well. They just don’t write stuff like that anymore. The tune is great whether you know what the song is about or not. For years I had no idea what it was about.

Take a Number from One to Ten - Jimmie Grier & Orch., 1934. Irrepressibly sunny and guaranteed to make your day a little brighter. Grier's band had that fat and happy sound of old Hollywood, possibly because they snuck onto a lot of film soundtracks.

You Hit the Spot - Richard Himber & Ritz-Carlton Orch., 1935. Dick brings Big-Time Radio crackle to a tune that might have been just a little too flip for his style. Kinda Your Hit Paradey, but not unenjoyable.

March Winds and April Showers - Abe Lyman & California Orch., 1935. Compare to Himber's ensemble just above; more or less the same instrumentation (even the singers sound a little alike), but a lot more rhythmic oomph.

It's December 12, 1936, and the Quaker Oats Company brings us "Kaltenmeyer's Kindergarten," a comedy program about a strict German (a la Katzenjammer) schoolmaster and his classroom full of zany ethnic stereotype students. This is a concept with deep, deep roots in vaudeville -- the Marx Brothers began their career doing exactly this act -- but it would vanish forever with the coming of the war, when strict Germans suddenly lost their comic value.

I'm a huge lover of early music and John Dowland wrote some of the most beautiful tunes ever, like the Earl Of Essex galliard (also known as Can She Excuse My Wrongs). I couldn't find neither the Jordi Savall nor the Dowland Consort versions on youtube, but his rendition is really nice as well.
