What are you listening to?

Hi everyone, this might be a really annoying question (if so, sorry) i only know the smallest bit about the most famous bandleaders, but i heard the song Joltin' Joe DiMaggio about half a year ago and i'm completely smitten with it. I want it on my ipod (i know, old school, right?) but i can't find it on cd anywhere. Does anyone know of a cd that the song has been put onto? (it'd be great if there were more Les Brown songs on there but isn't necessary) if not i'll just have to listen to it on spotify for the rest of my days. or wait a couple of years until i have a job/life and i can afford to buy a record player and learn how to not-destroy the needle. xxx

iPod....old school....not at all! I've had a quick look around, but unfortunately I haven't managed to find it listed on any CD, yet. But, and I'm sure you're aware anyway, it is available as a download, from iTunes, for your iPod.

Apologies if I've stated the obvious!

That was a huge hit in 1941, and tells the story of Joe D's 56-game hitting streak, which was brought to an end when he was held hitless "one night in Cleveland." Probably second only to "Sentimental Journey" as the most famous record Les Brown ever made.

Reportedly Who's Afraid Of The Big Bad Wolf? was one of Hitler's favorite tunes. One that he was often fond of whistling to himself. it's an interesting bit of symbolism that Hitler (the name Adolf is derived from Adawolf meaning "of the Wolf") was fascinated by wolves and wolf imagery. Perhaps he too saw himself as the biggest, baddest wolf of them all.

Happy Feet - Willie Lewis' Negro Band, 1941. The last American musicians to leave Europe - I kid you not! Maybe a tick or two behind the times - they still sound more like Fletcher Henderson than Count Basie. But I don't mind.

Everybody Loves My Girl - Four Aristocrats, 1927. Have I got an act for you, brother. First they play guitars and ukes. Then they sing harmony. Then they play some more. Then they vodeo a little. But don't worry - that's all they do.

Freshman Hop - Whoopee Makers, 1929. Get your soup and fish on and shake a leg, Frosh. Jack Pettis (who wrote it) plays C melody sax, and some of his fellow Ben Bernie lads may be in there, too. Maybe even that Goodman kid.

I just saw a posting for a 80’s obscure jazz music video, which I never knew existed until today. Ray Anderson is one of the most original musicians that I’ve ever heard. Way back in the 90’s I had the good fortune of seeing him at a jazz club/loft in Long Beach. I say that I had the good fortune because Ray has lived in Europe for many years, though he’s originally from Chicago and lived in New York for years. He was visiting his dad. Anyway, he gave one the greatest performances I have ever seen.

Ray is without a doubt one of the greatest trombonists that ever lived. But he’s also one of the greatest singers that I have ever heard. Ray has the rare ability to split his vocal chord and harmonize with himself. In the music video he is clearly miming his performance, but his original performance is not some studio trick. What an awesome musician.
