Tomorrow is Truck Day*, the most sacred holiday in the New England calendar, so in honor of it I'm listening to baseball -- specifically the 1938 All Star Game, from Crosley Field in Cincinnati, where Lefty Grove of the Red Sox is mowing the National League down in the 8th inning, and there is no snow on the ground anywhere.

* -- Truck Day, the day the Red Sox equipment truck leaves Boston for Spring Training. People gather on the street outside Fenway park to celebrate surviving another winter. If you lived here, you'd understand why.

It's November 13, 1937 and it's the National Barn Dance, direct from the WLS Hayloft, with Joe Kelly, Uncle Ezra, Lulu Belle and Scotty, the Hoosier Hot Shots, and special guest Alec Templeton, the brilliant blind comedian-pianist who seems to be completely forgotten today. He might seem to be a trifle too fey to fit in among among all the clodhoppers and overalls on this program but the Barn Dance was a far more eclectic program than it's ever gotten credit for being. One of the most popular programs of the 1930s, and very much deservedly so.
