Now playing, it's 1934 with Leo Reisman and his Orchestra, and the ever-so-aptly-named Sally Singer with the admonition "Don't Let It Bother You." Easy for you to say, sister.

Next, Mildred Bailey with her hubby Red Norvo and his Orchestra and a sprightly version of "Now That Summer Is Gone." But hey, it's only 159 days until spring.

I just caught this song on one of the local college radio stations-

Never heard of this guy before, but the rhythm is catchy and the guitar work is slick.

Nightmare. It's the first new music I've gotten excited about in ten years.

Iowa - The Land That Stuff Forgot
Mandy - Joe Haymes & Ork, 1934. Hip swingin' update of a tune already fifteen years old by that time.

It's Unanimous Now - Spike Hughes & Ork, 1930. Bunch of limeys doing a credible "New York Combo" style...that meant a semi-arranged small group doing the better pop/show tunes with crisp melodic statements and plenty of Hot. The startlingly good fiddle playing is by Stanley Andrews.

Parkin' in the Moonlight - Dorsey Bros. Ork, 1931. This cut really is a moment in time. Such ingenious arranging and peppy tempo on a commercial pick-up date was not quite the thing yet in 1930 and already going out of style by 1932, when really putting a song over became less common than just putting it out. For instance Can This Be Love?, done by the Dorseys later in '31, which immediately follows Parkin' on the video.
