John Zorn's covers of soundtracks of Italian films. The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly and a lot more, including some sweet, contemplative numbers.

"City Morning Song" by Sarah Shannon has turned out to be the most pleasant surprise music purchase I've made in some time. She was the lead singer of Velocity Girl, but rather than the shoegaze/alternarock sound of that band her solo stuff is pop, and I mean that in a very old-fashioned sense. Not today's pop of brainless teen girls and melodyless dreck, but pop in a very Mid Century Modern/Van Dyke Parks/Brian Wilson/Burt Bacharach sort of way. Piano, muted horns, strings, lovely melodies. Completely unexpected, but a beauty of an album if you like the older, good kind of pop, back when "pop" did not exclude the words "creative" or "artistic." She's got a web site at http://www.sarahshannon.com where you can listen to samples.

I'm on a velvet underground kick.

I have Sweet Jane, Waiting for the man, and Sister Ray in a rotation on repeat.

Good call with Ella Nashoba, her voice is like honey.

I've had Duke Ellington on, and isn't "Mood Indigo" a great tune...

I love Duke. My favorite is "East St Louis Toodle-Oo." I have a recording from, I believe, 1928 and it is smokin.'

The California Ramblers in 1930 doing Cole Porter's You've Got That Thing...not your usual bouncy showtime rendition...they do it as a medium New Orleans drag with 4-beat slapped bass, a 4-part sax chorus and NO vocal. And this was a commercial New York session band!
