What Aero lining in the summer

For a short summer jacket in heavy leather, what is the best lining?

First thought is cotton drill, but I wanna know from real experience
if it really is cooler then the tartan?

Insulation usually works both ways, so Im thinking the tartan
might actually keep you from being too warm.
I have no first hand experience with the tartan or cotton but only seen it
on pictures.

Eventually its gonna be too hot here to even wear pants, so I really
have to make the jacket as cold as possible. Im only ever gonna
wear just a t-shirt under.

The only riding jacket I can wear in the summer is a mesh jacket with armor. I can't imagine wearing any leather during the summer. Now, if your summertime temps don't get much above the low 80s, you could probably do it. Cotton drill lining ought to be your best bet for summer riding. I would stay away from anything with wool in it.

Im not thinking about riding, just casual stroling.

Hottest last summer were 93 and you cant wear anything else
then a t-shirt and shorts in that.

But that is the top and that usually only last for 2-4 weeks
and before and after is cooler.

Ok, then cotton drill it is.

Has anyone seen the red version. Is it crazy red?

Lining for summer __what about satin?

..... For a short summer jacket in heavy leather, what is the best lining? ....

What do you - and other guys - think about satin lining?
My next AERO will be a jerky seal brown Horsehide with a summer lining!
Therefore I also ask myself if I should go with the A-2 light cotton or with the M422a burgundy satin for my next summer jacket? All of my suits are lined with satin and this might be a good choice. My wife told me that satin in the winter gets me warmer and in the summer colder. Any thoughts?
Thanks.

I have a few samples of Aero lining that Amanda was kind enough to send me. I chose the wool worsted 'Common Riding' for my heavy horse Highwayman and it's a good choice for cold weather - nice soft wool but like the alpaca, a bit too warm for your summer jacket.

For my new medium weight horse Californian (should be arriving next week) I chose a cotton tartan called 'Grant'. I have the cotton drill and the Grant with me now as I type this and I have to say the Grant is much nicer feeling fabric, a bit thinner than the drill and not as course to the touch - should be great in a warm weather jacket.

Regarding satin, I did mention this to Will at Aero but he advised against it for a heavy horse jacket - something about it not up to the wear required.

For me, I would go with the Grant cotton tartan but you could always ask Amanda to send you some samples - you cant beat feeling the stuff first.

Hope this helps.

Cheers

I agree; satin can be sweat inducing. What about cotton gabardine? Cotton, yet easy on and off. I wonder if cotton drill, which can be a bit like sail cloth, would be irritating if you were wearing a short-sleeved shirt.

Edit: Just saw your message cooperson -- interesting point about the cotton tartan.

I have cotton drill lining in two of my Aero jackets (Californian and custom long half belt) and I don't find it the least bit irritating.

I ordered my Aero Hercules with cotton drill and satin
(or is that Sateen?) in the sleeves. The leather jacket
I've had for ~15 years (Johnson Leathers) is set up that
way, and it works great.

My Good Wear A-1 is, of course, cotton drill and some shirts
will cause friction going in. That's why I went back to the
satin in the sleeves.

BTW, Cooperson, when did you order the jacket you expect to
arrive next week? I can't seem to get a time/arrival estimate from Aero USA.

Thanks. I ordered in the first week of January, as I recall,
so I'm effectively a month behind you.

Looking forward to seeing your jacket. But probably not as much as you are.

I wanted satin at first since thats what I have in my other
jackets, but Amanda said satin is not an option in heavy leather.

I then thought cotton and satin in the arms, its a nice feeling
but Im starting to imagine me in the summer with warm arms,
the satin might get sticky and uncomfortable, and as noted
it might be warmer then cotton since it doesnt breed the same.
She also said that if one wants satin in the arms on a heavy
jacket, then its gonna be satin over cotton, and that was
the dealbreaker for me, i really dont want more lining then I need.

Wow, is there a list of cotton tartans to choose from or is it only this one?
If so do you have a link to a list or do you have pictures of the grant?

I found this thread where bobjones shows the two tartans, the black Stewart and the Grant.

http://www.thefedoralounge.com/showthread.php?t=46598&highlight=grant

There are huge choice of tartans and each one has many variants, some strong colors and some more subdued. If you want to see how many there are, have look here - there are more than you can shake a stick at :)

It's definitely worth contacting Amanda for some samples.

He didnt really say that it was all cotton tartan.

I know the list for wool tartans, are you sure they can
make all those in just cotton?

I think I read somewhere that you can have anything from the Locharran tartan list but I'm not sure if that is correct. I am waiting for some lining samples from aero myself I like the sound of the alpaca but am concerned that I will not be able to wear it in the summer, then again I do live in England so summer is usually brief.

Hm, Mark Moye said nothing about this to me.

I found the mail and she wasnt really sure.

Here it is:

Hi, thanks for your email and in answer to your questions…

1. In the cotton drill we have BLACK, BROWN & RED and in the sateen we have BLACK, RED & WINE
The cotton drill is very durable and the least warm that’s correct… we can put sateen over cotton drill
In the sleeves, I don’t think the sateen is durable enough just to be lined on its own in the sleeves…

I think Aero stock a few of the most popular cotton tartans and wool worsteds - a quick email to Amanda will answer all these questions.

I agree with Amanda that the cotton drill isn't that warm....and more of a spring/early fall liner. I had an Aero MC jacket(from eBay) lined will black drill and although very durable..it seemed to be quite "breathable" and not so warm. After dark on a cool damp night on the bike it just wasn't very warm. I sold it on since it wasn't quite warm enough for me in the wind on the bike. I would suggest that it may be Aero's least warmest lining.

The Aero Summer Halfbelt (a Summer option I've considered, though with the price rise effect I'm not so sure for now) comes with what they term "lightweight cotton".

http://www.aeroleatherclothing.com/...ge?page=displayproduct&subcatid=42&prodid=391

I'd say anything breathable is the key.... I have a few Harrington style jackets, all with brushed cotton lining (poly-cotton outer shells), and they're generally just fine in weather right up to any sort of a jacket being unwearable.
