So I bought this Cavanagh

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=8256288901&rd=1&sspagename=STRK:MEWN:IT&rd=1

for $9.99 on one of those "buy it now" deals, thinking I can clean it and give it a proper bash (something a bit less Red Skeltonesque) and maybe have a decent old lid to show for my 10 bucks (more like 16, with the shipping and insurance), plus maybe half a gallon of naptha (another five bucks) and a little bit of time and effort, which, truth be known, doubles as entertainment around here. It's hard to tell by the photos just how dirty and banged up it really is, but then, at 10 bucks, it's hard to go wrong. I hope.

Heck Tony, the leather & liner are worth what you paid. Let us know how it turns out. I got one in today that looks to be another challenge. Extreme makeover...again?

Thanks for the encouragement, Art. Did you notice that the seller referred to the hat as a "fadora," and, as though that weren't egregious enough, a "fandora"? Maybe that's what I'll call it--a 10 dollar Cavanagh fandora.
Any guesses as to its vintage? It may indeed be a candidate for an "extreme" makeover (I'll find out right after the mailman arrives), although turning it inside out would result in a true rarity: an upside-down Cavanagh edge.

Geez. No wonder I can't find any of those "big" hats for my head. I keep searching for fedoras. Well, I guess I better change my plans although I could use a nice big h"a"mburg for formal occasions. ;) Eric
