Here's my favorite western hat. "Tom Mix" styled. Probably a little more radical than what you're looking for.

Rooster- that hat's perfect on you!! seen lot's of folks trying to pull that off-
and you do it with such ease-feels great when you see someone who
"gets it" and doesn't squawk about it . GREAT!!:eusa_clap :eusa_clap

Dutchman, here is a hat made for me by Texas Hatters almost 30 years ago.
{I liked a thin ribbon back then.:D }

It is a style worn by Willie Nelson back then called the Lone Star Dude.
I havent worn it in a long time and I need to hit it with the hat jack, if i can get it back to size I may take a few shots of me wearing it.

Here's the two I got on ebay yesterday (I refuse to say I "won" them....if I won them, they would be free).

The one with the telescope crown is a Stetson from the '70's. The tan/brown one is a Resistol probably about the same time (according to the seller). Now, that telescope crown is STRAIGHT man! Normally, I don't like this kind of crown, but this one don't look too bad as it is. I'll see when I get it. I'm going to give the brown one the works. New ribbon, bound edge, nicely creased, turned up brim....

Both are from the same seller. He was cleaning out his western hat collection. The light one I got (just barely) for $36. The brown one I got for 21.99. I was the only bidder on that one...though I bid three times, just in case.... :D

It's the western hat wearer that typically gives me a knowing nod when I'm wearing my fedora. The brotherhood seems to be very accepting of the different styles.

I'd go for a Tom Mix style if I went for a western hat.

Just wanted to add my two cents and comment on Rooster's look. Being a westerner myself, now consigned to live in Florida while I take care of aging in-laws, I wear my jaxonbilt cavalry hat most days while working around the house and taking care of our horses.

Western style hats are what got me into hats in the first place.

Anyway, way to go Rooster, that hat is perfect on you!

Anyone on the edge (not sure of going all the way "Cowboy," but liking the style) should give Akubra another look, too. A lot of what I see called "Aussie" style is basically parked right in between a fedora and a full blown cowboy hat. The Snowy River or Boss, for instance, have wider brims than most fedoras and turn up on the sides more like a cowboy hat.

Relatively inexpensive way to get a nicer hat than wool, anyway ...

My everyday rain, sun, sleet, snow hat is an Akubra Squatter. A most outstanding hat. The brim is 3" wide, and it is a sort of "western" or "Southern" styled fedora.

For between $15 and $40 though, you can get a decent Western hat (Resistol, Stetson, Bailey, etc) on ebay...as long as you want black or silver belly!!! You can get brown/tan, but they're not so common.

Here is a shot of the Texas Hatters Lone Star dude on my head, its gonna take some work with the hat jack or a re-block before I can wear it and it feel like it should.

Fatdutchman, A pair of fine looking examples.
RBH, I know we can't tell how a hat feels from a picture, but the look is great!

Here's My Charlie 1 Horse 10X. (Yes, it's a contemporary HATCO.)

It's one of those hats I like better every time I wear it!

Nice J.T.!!
Forgive my ignorance but this is a gus style right? When the crown slopes down the front like that. Are you supposed to wear that style so the crown is level on the top of your head?

indycop, Thanks for asking. It's a "semi-gus." (Some might say a "pseudo-gus.") The crease on this one is only a little higher in back than in front. It's not the steep crease most people would identify as a Gus. I would, however pull the front brim down about a half inch more in the sun.
