Thanks Mark!STUNNING, Joe!!
Both are very beautiful, well done!Today I decided to re-work my custom 100X pure beaver hat made for me years ago at Shorty’s Caboy Hattery in OKC. I had this hat made back when I was doing a lot of cowboy action matches and was into big buckaroo styles. Since then, I’ve grown a little more traditional/conservative (I think shaving off my handlebar ‘stache triggered it) and the hat has sat mostly unused since. The hat started out as a tall, Montana pinch crown (similar to a Montana Slope or Gus but with a center ridge rather than a trough) with a 5” curled and bound brim. I didn’t want to trim the brim so I increased the pencil curl to visually reduce its width and re-blocked and re-shaped the crown. What I wound up with is kind of a combination of a cattleman but with just enough slope and other touches to give it a Gus vibe.

The second pic shows the Shorty’s hat along with another 100X also purchased years ago. Back then, there was a guy on Ebay selling buckaroo style hats he made with 100X bodies he obtained from the Winchester, TN plant. They were a little rough, but the price was really reasonable and rough was just fine to wear to the CAS matches. By rough, I mean he cut some corners such as using a hot melt glue gun to put in his sweatbands. This hat was similar to the Shorty’s in having a tall crown that I shaped with a single sloping center dent and no side dents. It also had a 5” brim with a bound edge that used a low quality ribbon and a matching band. On this hat, I cut the brim by an inch, and re-blocked and reshaped the crown to a basic cattleman crease. I had Shorty's install a new sweat, liner and the ribbon band. My goal was to produce a contemporary style hat using that nice 100X body and I think I succeeded.

I’m pretty happy with the way each turned out and that they are now back in the rotation instead of languishing in my hat closet.
