Western, anyone?

I'm an Okie now, so I can wear cowboy hats more. I grew up in small town Southern Illinois, where I was a city slicker. My parents taught, no cattle, no hogs, no corn, and no horses. Only the guy whose family owned horses wore cowboy boots, dirt bike riders had Wellington's. The rest of us wore Converse High Tops. Went to College and was the redneck, what a change. When I met a Chicago boy, he was actually scared of us rednecks.

You gotta think you look good in what you have on or you won't look good. You show more hat than face, but I think you'd like the higher crown stuff more. You might try a shallow center dent and slightly more front and back dip.

For now I’m not making any irreversible changes. I’ve ironed the brim and then gave the bumpers just a little curl. I’m still not convinced I can pull off this type of a hat.

Next up: another attempt at a kettle curl.

Ha! I didn’t like that hat as it was so I trimmed the brim back a bit and gave it a kettle curl. I also partially reblocked it and gave it les of a western look.

Hats are very personal items. We all develop our preferences, and my western preferences are still in the nascent stages. I might come to terms with them, but at heart I’ll always be more of a fedora guy.

I’ve tried western hats a few times and I always like the way they look but I don’t like how I look in them. Today I decided to wear my recent acquisition Resistol 4X that I converted to a Gus and gave a kettle curl. Still not sure it’s me.

Hell...I don’t know where to post these any more.

Went to the annual craft festival where The Quiet Lady shows/sells her beadwork. She said that she had taken the year off to care for her ailing brother, so the selection was from her older stock. I still came away with three new hat bands. All glass beads...

This is what I learned after befriending an elderly Native American woman back in the 1980's & late in her life, & the artistic opinions I have formed since.

When buying or having a beaded hatband made it should be for a specific hat based on the beaded pattern, bead colors, width & even the way it ties. Traditional beaded Native American hats told a story. Today with geometric bead patterns they are a component to a work of art. They're not like neckties to be worn with just any shirt. They're not hat bling like conchos.

The bead dyes used were all made from plants & vegetables. There were no colors like gold, silver or bleached out pure whites. Turquoise gemstones were important in Native American cultures but the color is way over used today.

Beaded hatbands work best with Western hats that have strong angular lines & rakes like the Montana Peak, Montana Pinch, Gus, Tom Horn, etc. They can also work well with Western Derbys, Boss of the Plains & other open crowns. As I said in the WHAYWT thread they work great on a Western Derby with beaded brim binding. They don't work well with telescopes, C-crowns or diamonds.

The hat is the canvas with its lines & with the pattern of the beadwork together they become a piece of modern wearable 3D art.

Dang, I tried to bead a knife sheath for a lady I work with who makes a Snowman Cake for her Xmas party every year. I gave up on beading as did my daughter. I had the story. That beading is lots harder than it looks.

I would have thought the Telescope would be a natural with the beaded hatband??

The tubular peyote stitch being commonly taught today doesn't look too difficult but holding a pattern on a loom is, I would think. That's one reason why beaders commonly use the #11/0 & larger bead rather than the smaller #15/0 seed bead. You can get a lot more detail with the smaller seed bead.

To me there is nothing more boring & less artistic than the lines of a telescope creased hat & a beaded hatband with a Native American animal fetish repeating sparsely around the band, & long leather ties hanging off the back brim. YMMV, but where's the art, where's the story in that? Another thunderbird? Yet another eagle? That's not art, that's just bling.

Haven't posted any other hats lately so, might as well bump this with my latest, a No. 1 Quality Stetson. I like these hats as the dimensions suit me and they'll shape up to just about whatever you want. Judging by the sale tag, this one was on the shelf 02/58 with a price of $13.99. They're limited only by the 5 3/4 OC and the 3 1/4 brim. The crowns have a bit of taper but not terrible. This one came with a cattleman and a high roll on the fenders. After steaming and brushing I opened it up and ironed it flat.

I wanted something a bit different for a crease and I gave the Cutter a shot. Did the shaping on the side dots with an arrowhead as my guide. As always, don't know if it will stay this way.

That's a nice #1 skinny cord, BB! I like what you have done with it. When I look at that last profile pic with the lighting & shadows I see a Texas Longhorn. Good job with the brim too!

Love the bash on this!!!! I really like the "for and aft" pinches. I have done this on a couple of mine and get a LOT of positive comments about it!!!! You just do not see it every day......now that you have done that on your skinny ribbon....looks like I will have to remove the cattleman crease and do this with my 3X skinny.........................I am inspired again!!

Just nabbed this old (60s?) JC Penny branded straw hat. It's made in Tawain, but I have kind of a thing for this more boxy looking style crease, and there's pretty much no finding anything new shaped like this.
