The hat band was custom made by a guy in Memphis, he can fix you up with what ever you need in leather, matter of fact he showed me how to do the lacing, he did about have of it, and let me to the other half.

*blush* thanks....not the best pictures of me but the only ones I had of me actually wearing that hat in particular...I have another of me and the hubby taken at one of the last Garth Brooks concerts in South Padre, TX but it's not in digital format...and it would just make me sad to look at anyway because it's of my old western which was lost in one of our moves along with my husband's western and every single one of his garrison, barracks, and dress covers.....:rage: those were expensive to replace. And he still hasn't replaced his western....

Nashoba, I made just the hat for you next time you sing at the Wild Horse, I hang out in Legends when I get to Nashville.

wow...now *that's* a hat! I love it! Don't know that the opportunity to sing at the WH will ever present itself again. As it was I was singing for a private party...Legends is up by Opryland right? I don't think I've actually ever been there. Maybe I'll head up there tomorrow and snap a pic in front of it with the Ladies GTH...

Old Eddy throw-away

Folks.. I have an old (25) XX fur Eddy (cattleman) that was squashed flat long ago and curled up like potato chip. I was about to toss it when I read something on a web site regarding making a "character hat" rather than tossing them. I've been working on it today in an attempt to make a Gus, of some sorts. I must say it did better than I thought, but I'm having problems in widing the crease in the back and getting rid of the 25 year old cattleman crease. Any tips for rounding the back and getting the classic triangle shape crease? Additionally, has anyone used hat stiffener after a conversion to get the "western stiff brim" back? Ron

OK.. What does it need. I just noticed the 3 1/2" brim:eusa_doh: It's just not wide enough for a proper Gus I also think the crown is too high, but I'm not sure just how to rectify it. What do you folks think? Ron

You didn't say how you went about shaping it. If you did it all dry, you got better results than might have been expected. If you used steam, and are still not satisfied, the next step is to dunk it in cold water, till saturated. Then shape it exactly the way you want, and let it dry in that shape. Be sure to try it on several times, while drying, so it will conform to the oval of your head. (It takes two or three days to dry.) The shape it dries in will become the new "memory."

Stiffener is available, and several guys here have used it. They will probably post their suggestions soon.

Thanks Dinerman.. Do you mean/are you saying that the crease is too low in the front? I thought about that as well, but it's creeping higher as it sets. Thanks Ron

I don't think that the problem is that the crown is too high, the problem is that it's too tapered.

Process

I started with steam and then went to hot water (didn't know any better:eusa_doh: ). It "downsized" a-bit so I steamed the band area and am wearing it now (cooking dinner actually) to get it back in shape. What do you think about the stingy brim? Thanks ron

Ron, I have made several with a 3 1/2" brim, they look good on each person that wore them, sometimes the 3 1/2" brim doesn't look right on some people and they need a 4", it all has to do with you face, height and shoulder width.

Most people do seem to bring the front of the Gus crease down to low in the front, again, if you like it, go for it.

You just need a hat band, the one I would use is two pieces of rawhide lace twisted together , and tied on the side like what was on the Gus hat in the movie, it is real easy to do, and will make the hat look much better than horse hair hat band or one with silver all over it.

Some on my own hats that I really like to wear have been soaking wet, from heavy rains, I just do what I want to the brim and crown and wear it, if it is a good hat with a good amount of beaver in it, want hurt a thing to get soaking wet, and shape by hand like you want, matter of fact I have heard that is what Roy Rogers did on his hat, the one we all watched him wear with the double telescoping crown with the pinch in front, he stood in the shower with it on and shaped it, and that became his trade mark style hat, at least that is what I have heard, sounds good.

The hat just needs a few touch ups and will look nice, don't give up. keep trying and learning and you will get the hang of it.

Thanks Mike.. I hadn't thought about a rawhide band! I'm normally a horsehair guy, but with this hat it doesn't work. I'll try the rawhide. Here it is with the original Eddy band.. Thanks ron

While browsing through old pictures, I ran across this one from 2002.

It was our Church's Centennial, and I made sepia 8X10's for everybody. My wife is wearing a ladies fur velour that I found lying in the middle of the sreeet. I'm wearing a "100% Premium Wool Felt," once sold at Wal-Mart (Silver Spur, I think. I removed the liner.). Both hats were washed in cold water and "re-blocked" by hand. (I know that's a contradiction in terms, but you know what I mean.) My "Gus" is radically different from its original shape!
