I have a few hat projects in the works and this Whiskey 3X Resistol is going to be one of them. It has the usual tall and tapered up crown that was typical of its era and a nice 4 inch brim. I'll be taking this one apart for reblocking and restyling. The sweat and everything original to the hat is in very good condition and will be reused. I plan to keep it Western but I don't know if I'll be keeping the hat since I'm not partial to the color. I'll have more on this hat after I'm finished...

On the head in its current form...

I know how I want to style the brim. I just have to figure what crease I want after its been reblocked.

I have this Highwayman in black coming from Michael Gannon this wk. I have him change the ribbon from a version of the OR thin ribbon he normally uses to this 13/16 with frayed ends. To me his Highwayman reminds me of a 1920's - 1930's era Western dress hat, a style I like very much.

Western ? Outside of the 3 1/2" brim with a slight curl, I don't see it and I understand we don't all see things the same way. Petersham ribbon on a western and the closest I've seen of colors like this on a western are some barrel racer's hats. The feather and round braided band don't add anything to that western vibe. Their site even refers to this as the Bohemian style. Never heard a bad thing about the quality of their hats but this just falls into the category of another overly decorated hipster hat. Put a matchstick in the ribbon and what do you have? YMMV

Hmm. I see what you’re saying, but I’ve seen wide ribbon westerns and it looks more western than city, and since I’m not aware of a middle ground category....

It doesn’t look all that dissimilar to a Gannon Highwayman to me and that too is a quasi western. I routinely remove feathers, bands, and other adornments so I don’t let the accoutrements distract me. As to color, it isn’t claiming to be “authentic” or vintage, is just is what it is and some will like it and some won’t. It’s not my favorite either. If you don’t like the ribbon width or style they will change it for you.

That's not even a Gannon Highwayman you have as your example.

Yet, you go on.
It's what Bowen calls "Pokin' the Bear" which in this case as is most times, I'm sure I'm the bear: 61 cm, purple, reference to a Highwayman. Since RJR has pased away there are probably only 3-4 of us at 61 cm, & 2 of them rarely buy hats.

As far as my buying of custom & bespoke new hats, I'm pretty loyal to all the domestic hatters I have used before & who support this forum. I will always support USA domestic hatters first. I have no need to go off shore just to save a few $$ maybe when it's all said & done. I'm loyal to a fault. Ask my family, friends & business associates.
