On rare occasions I get an order for a hat that allows me to throw caution to the wind and really have some fun with the craft. The kind of hat build where perfection is the opposite of the ultimate goal. When the young man in California asked me to recreate the "Ellsworth" hat my first question was "WHY?!". I told him that I thought it was a just a beat up, wonky looking hat that I probably wouldn't want to be seen wearing in public (how's that for great salesmanship?), but he stood his ground and told me that's exactly what he wanted. Hey, who am I to argue? I loved the HBO series Deadwood and was in awe of most of the character's hats, however, not so much the one Jim Beaver's character wore. Regardless of my feelings, I dove right in and did my best to stay true to the spirit of the hat, right down to the mattress ticking fabric hatband. Now I have to admit that, not only was it great fun to make, it's definitely grown on me and I'll miss it when it's gone. Who'd a thought?

Thanks Doc. Probably won't win any exact replica awards, but it was fun to make.
Is it difficult to make the long axis of the hat diverge from the long axis of the head like that?
I remember that someone mentioned that with the Indiana Jones hat, and that it had a purpose I didn't understand.

Cold and rainy today. Took the opportunity to wear the Stetson No.1 quality.

I'm pretty envious DD. Not just of the hat, but also the weather. It was sunny and 96 when I headed home from work. It's still in the low 80s now as the sun is setting.

I'm currently sweating through this straw Stetson

Divergence is an excellent term to describe this one Doc. I had to make a special brim block to get it even close. I think the costume designers for the series probably just said, "let's make this hat look like he sleeps in it".

Hey BB

Who made that hat? Are western Montecristi heavier weight like western weight felt? I wonder if I could shellac a hat like that to make it fit my island lifestyle.

And that shirt!

Very cool!

Jonesy, the hat was made for Wrangler by Miller Bros. The weave/fiber is the same as on a Montecristi fedora. I have two of them and the one pictured has close to a 600 wpsi while the other is closer to 400, both fairly nice weaves but the hats had wired brims which limited shaping them. I was able to remove the wires and did shellac the brims help them hold up and hold a steamed shape. The shirt is vintage in a pattern Rockmount no longer offers but they do still offer western style aloha's.

Some of the custom hatters here may do a Montecristi westerns but I don't know. The only one I'm aware of doing it regularly is Montecristi Hat Works in Santa Fe, NM.

Check out this one, $1895 as pictured.

That is one fine looking hat Jack.

I've really cut back on my hat acquiring these days, but one of these is still on my want list.

Thanks Dale. I hope to have time to straighten it up & take better pics today or tomorrow. It looks very much like my Churchill Dalworth so the dimensions should be the same. The fit is good but I've had my band block in it overnight. I'm excited to have it.

Don't give up on your hat acquisitions!
