Try RJ Preston Sombreros for a true Sugarloaf.

RJ likely makes the best traditional felt sombrero around. Good call on that one. Now that is a hat!

Here are a couple of shots from my Stetson Western Hat catalog from the Late 50's early 60's....Some have commented on my statement about Stetson and their re-invention and renaming of various hat models INCLUDING their iconic Boss of the Plains....this catalog shows this and more including a renaming on a model listed right in the catalog (the High Mesa). Has a great poem "My Old Stetson Hat"!!!!!More here at: http://www.thefedoralounge.com/thre...a-of-the-golden-era.92141/page-4#post-2375635

Greetings M Hatman et al:
Thanks for the great post. That poem really brings to life what a hat really is...every bit a part of one, just as an arm or a leg. A trusted friend, a sacred thing to aid and complete life. Those WERE the days!!
Also, i want one of each of those OR’s!! Got a start...guess i’m back on the hunt. 100s anyone?? Ha
Be well and thanks. Bowen

A newer Bailey 8x. Might leave it open, at least for now.

Nice hat! Not a Bailey but I have one that is a duplicate of yours. Mine's not self banded either...wish it were. But a simple string band. Open crowns are for the true western hat aficionados :)

Mackey beaver, 4.5" brim, 6" crown, sand color, half pencil curl, bound edge. Had it a couple of years now. Picture is from 2 minutes ago, finally hit 30F this afternoon from a low of 5F @ sunrise!

Easy now, cowboy.

There is a saying here local..."Only the greenhorn wanta bees show up with an open crown". Heard it more than once. Never to my face. They that said it might obviously be an uneducated retch who don't know their history just yet :) Flat hats and open crowns are history.....ash trays not so much.

But then this is a most hat shape here local :)

any place it actually rains an ashtray makes no sense.

Alta California and the original cowboys were a simple flat brim, flat top.

Like the looks, just not on me but I've never understood the appreciation for those flat crowns. Lotsa rain here. Just don't need anything on my hat to collect it.

Buck Brannaman often wears that style of hat and his daughter, Reata, sponsored a line of Sunbody hats in that style. Don't know if she still does.
