Great job on updating the 4X, DD. I like the crease, personally I stay away from tassels but I like the the look of the hat on you.

I see we like to wear the same shirts. With a long beard I can't remember the last time I wore a shirt with a collar.

Thanks HJ. It looks like we have similar tastes in shirts and hats. That is a very good looking beaded hat band. I have been wanting one of those.

Good job on the nutria, BB. It looks really good. And I like that green Portis, I only wish it had been in my size. If you decide you want more definition that just a shallow center crease can always try some short pinches. Maybe something like this:

Jack, I probably will do just that. I've never worn a western w/o pinches. Just thought I'd try it as is for awhile, as soon as it cools enough to get back under a cowboy hat.

On a side note I wish you wold stop posting that hat. That's an itch I'm trying not to scratch. I love that thing.

Thanks BB! I think that Portis would make a great 1910's - 1920's Western dress/crossover style of hat & that is exactly what I had in mind when I had BSHW copy for me what he had done for Jared & indirectly some of Alan's vintage Stetsons of the era.

I have a Texas Hatters "Lone Star Beer" hat with the Austin liner and a Half-Breed with the Buda liner. Good to narrow down the dates. Thanks Lefty!
You're welcome!
Does your "Lone Star Beer" hat have a forward-sloping crease, similar to what is now popularly referred to as a "Gus" style, and a leather band with shotgun shell conchos and Lone Star Beer logos? That was a special hat that Texas Hatters came out with in the early 1970s, back when Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, and others were creating the "cosmic cowboy" music scene in Austin. They called the crease a "pull-tab" crease because the shape resembeled a pull-tab, formerly the way beer cans were opened. The hat was advertised pretty heavily in Texas Monthly magazine.

I've got a couple of Stetson Skylines- I love switching back and forth from black to Silver Belly depending on my mood. Both have tone on tone hat bands and I'd like to consider other options (not the kind you find at a Boot Barn or similar western supply store). I assume there are some artisans here?

By the way, is it just me or do Western hats deserve their own forum, rather than a thread?

I did a little work to my 4x stetson. The first picture is the before shot. Recreased and changed hat band to a thin horse hair, that I have had over 40 years. I think I will wear this more now. It still needs a little more steam and finish work .

I've been tweaking a couple of my westerns lately.

This Portis 3X silver beaver, MIA Bob suggested a simple center dent, so that's what I did. The only hat I have, outside of my homburg, that i haven't put dents in. Left the brim mostly flat with a slight roll to the fenders.

Nice work!

I'm especially a fan of that Stetson
