Question for y'all (I can say "y'all" in this thread. It must be allowed).

What about campaign hats?
I don't have one but I admired the "round browns" my drill sergeants wore and I think Roosevelt looked pretty badass in one--as well as Canada's RCMP (they look very badass in them too).

Anyone have wear one or have one?

I think given the era of their common usage and their overall style, I thought this thread was the appropriate place to ask. If not, please redirect.

This is a version of a campaign hat.

On the FL,"Smokey Bear" and "Mounty" hats are generally referred to as a version of Montana peaks creased western hat.
A "campaign" hat is different and there is a thread for them.

I like the camera angle of the last pic & the way the fenders roll out at the back. Looking at that pic reminded me of the lines of the CIA's Oxcart.

I believe you are both correct; those are simply different models of US military campaign or service hats as they came to be called. While I do not consider wiki to be a definitive source, the entry for campaign hats is entirely devoted to the Smokey Bear/Montana Peak style hat. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Campaign_hat Thus I believe it is correct to refer to those as campaign hats.

After the ACW, there were several versions of the campaign/service hat. M1876, M1883, M1889, M1902 and the M1911, the final version with the Montana Peak. I've read that they settled on the Montana Peak for the M1911 due to its practical function of allowing precipitation to roll off the crown, as many soldiers had figured out on their own and shaped them previous to its official adoption in 1911.

I haven't had a chance to peruse the Campaign Hat thread linked above and hope to learn more from it. At 56 pages with a lot of broken PB image links, I'll eventually get to it and maybe I'll learn that my understanding of the nomenclature is lacking, though I've read a fair amount about this in the past.

Speaking of Montana Peaks . . . Great segue, eh? I did receive the hat I ordered from Grizz a couple of weeks ago. I was on a family vacation for a week and then a busy week at work, so I haven't been around for a couple of weeks. I'd have to look back to figure it out exactly but delivery time was much less than the advertised 4-6 weeks. I sent him a pick of the top of my head and requested a long oval and the fit is good. The sweat band is a cloth laminate which is very practical though not period. I'll decide over time about that. I requested and receive it in a 4" brim, as his standard is less.

I like it but haven't had much time to spend with it. It came with a simple twine head band and he advertises that he does that to allow for individual choice. I haven't stitched it on yet but think the hat band I pulled off my Akubra Snowy River works well as seen in the pics. I have a CAS shoot coming up this weekend so hopefully I'll have some shots of it atop my head after that.

I've tried every crease I can think of dry in this Resistol Stagecoach but always come back to liking a Tom Horn best. It won't hold the dents without steam so in the next day or so I'll fire up the steamer for the dents & smooth out the center crease a bit. The brim is close to what I want; just needs some straightening up & a bit of an edge curl. The color is called Tanbark & I'm going to use this beaded hatband. The pattern is called snake.

Not many more details...The piece was purchased from an acquaintance on eBay last year. It sat around for a while with a white white ribbon, and a flat brim. It was somehow dyed giving what I could call the 'Palomino' horse look. I put the bash in the crown, had Tom Terrific reattach the sweat, and give it the look it has now, ribbon and all. He [Tom] was quite concerned as to whether the dye would 'bleed' when putting the curling irons to the brim. I held my breath until he told me things would be fine! The felt is definitely Western weight, heavy, and has the feel of horse hair! More relevant shots...
