Being something like 1/16th Welsh, but 100% proud of it, I'd like to wish all Welshman (and women) a belated happy St. David's Day. For those of you who wonder what this means, St. David's Day, March 1st, is the equivalent of St. Patrick's Day, the feast of their national patron saint.

Some dear friends of our family went to the University at Aberystwyth in the 70s and came back WBC = Welsh By Choice. There is a surprising number of such folks, which says something about the culture. They learned the language, went to eisteddfods and gymanfa ganus and the whole deal.

And that culture, once you're immersed, has an amazing hold. The wife and husband eventually separated and she married a Davies from Iowa. Davies passed on and she married a Jones from Nebraska. The midwest is studded with veins of Welshness...anywhere there used to be coal.

What with many Welsh traditionally being teetotalers - one of their few bad points - the old joke about St. David's is that is traditionally spent in an orgy of excessive sobriety.

Hmm. I learned something about my Welsh heritage today. Thank goodness I've got nearly as much Irish to balance out that excessive sobriety!
