Not sure on the hat with the light colored ribbon, maybe a Cavanaugh with a trolley cord. The other hat is a Stetson Royal Deluxe Saint Regis.

In my World neither of them are to blame. How to wash your clothes, sew in your loose buttons and cook tasty and healthy meals is all something you should learn long before leaving home. A little more parental skills would probably have helped, but that is way too late now. Poor unfortunate youngsters!

Nope, I use naptha. Works great.

Heavily soiled hats take a lot of work to clean. Naptha is great for oils, but it doesn’t work well for everything. I’ve used Dawn dish soap and a stiff bristle brush to good affect, but then I was reblocking the hat so I was able to use lots of water to rinse out the felt. If you can’t get all the soap out you’ll have a whole new set of problems.

I used Dawn because that’s what I had on hand. I think starting with Woolite is a good idea.

I had a filthy Silverbelly get pretty clean using naptha and Dawn soap. I dyed the felt rust red when I was done and reblocked and re-flanged it so I wasn’t worried about shrinkage or distortion.

Shortly thereafter I gave up on dyeing felt.

Ignacio down in Mexico City showed me how he cleans hats first not with a brush but with plain, wadded-up toilet paper. He just works it along the felt picking up tons of dirt. On some spots he’ll add a little of his naphtha cleaner (he has some other industrial dry cleaner chemical he buys by the barrel), but the goes back to the plain toilet paper before brushing.

Just dry, good pressure. I have been doing the same with good results on dusty hats. It picks up a lot of dirt, more than my boot brush / hat brush.
