Nikki, those hats were all incredible! But what a lot of money they went for. I know, they got a lot or them, but I still think that's a pretty high price..
I too grabbed the images. Maybe one day I'll find someone who makes hats who will be able to recreate them for me, and that I'll actually be able to afford them......

Well...

Actually, it is one thought that has found considerable time in my head. It goes like this. I swear I have noticed that some of the men I hang out with have slowly started dressing better. No new hat guys yet, but slacks instead of jeans. Button down instead of knit. Testing the water so to speak. O.K. this could take some time.

Then there are my lady friends. Some of these gals are SHARP. And not afraid of hats. Or vintage for that matter.

I have always made my own hats and made a few for sale and for friends over the years. Leather hats. "Real hats with brims that go all the way round."

I see cheap ladies hats at the thrift stores all the time. I mean cheap, not inexpensive, which they are also. And they seem to set the bar as now and then I will see what appears to be a well made out of good materials ladies hat priced for a short song.

And a few women I know make hats, too. Nice, interesting, modern hats. But none of the cool flapper or bobby stuff. No art deco. Odd I think, considering the current trend towards what I like to call "Resurgence Art Deco."

Kinda a long way around to, if I made a few nice ladies hats, I wonder if I might start a trend among them that could spill over to their boyfriends, my friends. Who knows, maybe get the whole town wearing hats?

I just have to add, I think those hats went for an insanely low price. Good lord, any one of those should get that price. Those hats are far more difficult to make than a Fedora. That is real craftsmanship and high art there. I wish more people than those that hang out in the lounge recognized this stuff.

Or maybe not. We do seem to get some pretty good deals because no one else in the room has any idea that's a 1930's ....

I love hats and collect some especially by a person named Adele Clair (why I don't know) they seem to be well made.
This is a hatmaker on RubyLane. She seems to sell alot of hats and mostly Victorian. I have sold every cloche hat I have ever listed.
This mall is the competition to Tias where my shops are located but thought appropriate for this thread.
Sure hope you do start making hats for ladies. This was the last one I sold. It was a work of art.

I watched that auction too and realized pretty early that I had no hope. I have a hard enough time justifying some of the auctions I bid on. I don't think I could explain $325 for a lot of hats. Not that the craftsmanship wouldn't demand it, but just because it's too rich for my blood. I've spent a lot of time trying to train myself to save money...a purchase like that would just send me on a downward slide. I thought about bidding when it was $10 but as it got higher up and up I knew there wasn't a chance....sigh...the flea market is this weekend though, maybe I'll find something nice there. Last month was a hat month for me, I came home with 4 of them and I think the most I spent was $12 on a black velvet Halo number that is just too cute. Would have been nice to add those beauties to the collection..

I agree! I think each of those hats was worth far more than $16 each. That is a bargain for those! The netting is even intact on the veils!

My favorite was the straw one, too.

I know because not too long ago I found myself standing amongst beautifully displayed ones and drooling.lol
We need an annual every lady wear a hat day. I know those red hat ladies have a ball. Ever found yourself in a restaurant with a bunch of them nearby? It is a hoot to watch. :eusa_clap

BTW: I would of never sold this Adele Clair hat shown above if it would of fit on my big head.

I think they coould have gotten more if they listed them seperately.

Yes, it was a great price for the lot.. but I still didn't think it would go that far. Or at least I had hoped, lol! Plus $20 to ship them all!

I can't drop that much all at once, but I'm sure we've all spent our share of $10 here, $16 there, ect. Kinda makes you cringe when you think of how much $$$ is sitting in our closets! I try not to think of it too often, and yet when I do I don't worry about it. I don't buy name brand exspensive clothes like some, and vintage will only go up in value!

Which is really more of why I'm relegated to the vintage ones I'm able to find in thrift stores and the flea market or garage / yard sales. Not that there aren't gorgeous hats to be found out there in the stores, I could just never justify the cost. Most of the stuff I buy even my clothes I try to spend under $30 as a general rule and I really try to stay under that for vintage. I'm a bargain hunter by nature and necessity (stems from my newlywed days when we were ridiculous poor) and I can't hardly justify spending over $30 on a dress let alone a hat. Even now when I can actually afford it, it's just painful sometimes for me to spend the money....I was sad to see them go so high, but you're right when you look at what they cost a piece it was a very good deal.

Those hats were AMAZING. I was watching them and would have easily paid $300 plus for them were I not saving for a pricey little gadget that will remain nameless. I adore hats and buy them often. I think that regardless of what you wear, it's your hat, shoes and other accessories that give you that element of class and elegance. That was one lucky winner!

Those hats were a steal for the person that bought them. One 1940s hat at the Manhattan Vintage Show in April of this year was selling for $140. I guess a lot of it depends on whether you are buying for resale versus buying for yourself.
