Just got a pretty pristine fedora made by Waltar Barnard & Son of 97 Jermyn Street, London. A really nice (cavanagh) - (Meant to say, bound edge! sorry) edge, black felt with black grossgrain ribbon. By Appointment to Prince of Wales. Looks to be 30's.

Anyone know of the history/heritage of this company? All info appreciated.;)

No information for you, but I'm interested in seeing photos. Non-American Cavanagh Edges are fairly uncommon, with the notable exception of Borsalino. Oh, and Canadian-made hats, like the licensed Dobbs.

Very nice looking hat Paddy! They were around in 1953 in this Life magazine article. See caption under bottom left photo. Life1953

Found in the back of a thrift store. Now has a new loving home.

That one's certainly a stonker, PADDY. Looks like it was on a shelf or a hanger and not on the bottom of a full box .

Nice, elegant taper to it.

What are the dimensions?.

Geez, what a beautiful hat!! Why don't those "found in the back of a thrift store for .99 windfalls" ever happen to me, dang it?

Beautiful! But it doesn't look like a cavanaugh edge to me. It looks like a regular ribbon bounded brim. Or am I looking at it weird?

I was never sure of black...

But this is 'so fine' that it really is growing on me, and the company 'in it's day' was obviously a very fine purveyor of hats (you don't get a Royal Appointment to the PoW for nowt!). It's also a sad indication of how these old family firms/businesses have just died out and few remember them even existing [huh] How many have gone the same way?

Sadly, Jermyn St. in London is slowly becoming another average city high street...alas..!
