Wallet Recommendations On a Budget

Hi all,

My current wallet is slowly falling apart, and I want to get something nice. In a perfect world I'd like a horsehide wallet, something simple, but sturdy. Due to the lousy exchange rate from CAD to USD, I'd like to not spend a fortune. Can anyone suggest a thrifty-ish wallet, that is of a reasonable high quality?

Have you thought of possibly kangaroo or bison leather instead? They are quite durable, and not nearly as expensive.
But if you're looking at horse, take a look at Aero or Coronado. Coronado is expensive, Aero not so much but I don't know what shipping from Scotland would look like for it.

You might try Leathergoodsconnection.com. I've got seven or eight of their belts, and I got a wallet from them about five years ago that's still going strong. First-rate stuff, reasonably priced, and they get your order out in no time. Good company.

Many will consider this well neigh sacrilegious, but I always check out Amazon.com and Walmart first, for most everything.
Of course, there are many who are absolutely convinced that everything sold by Walmart is substandard, often without ever having bought anything from them, and that, for example, Walmart's Fruit of the Loom and Hanes underwear is obviously vastly inferior to the precise same products that are sold at substantially higher prices elsewhere, but I've been quite pleased with the leather wallet that I bought from Walmart for $9.99 and that I have been using constantly for over a half-dozen years now.

Well, not I, sir! I go where the deals are. And with Amazon Prime, I'm a fool not to check there first! Over the past year I've had a microwave and lawn mower delivered with no shipping charges. The wallet I recommended is available on both Amazon and eBay, as well. In fact, I got mine off the Bay because it was a bit cheaper than any other source, but it still was sold by Australian Gear.

Mitchell money clip wallet. Absolutely the best I've had because it fits well in the front pocket and everything is easy access. I used Ashland leather Louis Little New Yorker and it's OK if you never use cash. If you still use cash for anything the Mitchell is a great option. Once you move to a front pocket wallet you'll notice how bad so many men look with the wallet outline in the back pocket of their expensive pants

Second the vote on a Mitchell wallet! Mine currently is stuffed with 16 cards and varying amounts and denominations of currency. Love it.

I have a Mitchell wallet too, it's the best design I've used with great leather options. I used to have a Bellroy but never quite liked it. It's made in Australia and things just fit wonky and getting money in and out was not easy, I'm guessing they're designed for Australian bills not US denominations. I gave it to my son.

A few years back I purchased an RM Williams brand kangaroo wallet in black from a vendor in Australia. Very nice and very tough. I'm not sure it was as inexpensive as the one from Australiangear, though.

I have one of these - picked it up in the Horween cordovan / burgundy leather, to match my Aero Bootlegger. Lovely wallet. Closest I've found to the best designed wallet ever I owned, which is a cheapo little moneyclip thing with a few pockets that I picked up on a streetmarket in Beijing so as to have a small wallet I could slip in a shirt pocket while on a holiday there. I still use it on all my trips to Beijing, but it was too flimsy for day to day. The Mitchell is in a different class, beautiful stuff. I also have two of the Saddleback Leather ID Wallet - I use those daily. One has business cards and my travelpass and work ID in it, the other carries my driving licence, bank card and banknotes. Really lovely. I actuall have a third one too (the idea was I would switch between brown and black to match my jacket et cetera, but I'm not generally that organised.... ). Can highly recommend both brands. The Mitchell was much more expensive, though I think they had cheaper, non-Horween hide ones. If you're only buying a couple of wallets, email Saddleback first - the shipping fees on their site are based on bags, but they'll refund you a fair whack of shipping if all you want is a couple of wallets. Email 'em first to enquire. Good people.

Beautiful, high quality, genuine leather wallet. Have had it for several years now and know I will have it for many more.
I believe it was around $45 CAD.

My wallet was made by a guest in the West Jefferson correctional facility. It cost $10, and I've had it nearly 15 years now. Probably getting about time for a new one.

I just replaced my wallet with a Tumi (seconds quality for $45). Quite nice. Looking around on fleabay, I noticed quite a few vintage wallets from Rolfs (from when they were made in US) and Coach (when made in New York even) selling at attractive prices. Some were even NOS.
