My answer:

Do your hair in the trendy way: buzz cut at sides and back, longer on top, and all pushed forward, and pushed straight up in front, with a little bit of pomade/mousse after a shower. Sort of a messy look, but, when you take your hat off, you simply run your hands front to back through your hair once, maybe twice, and you're good to go. Here's me just after taking hat off head and running hands through hair ((with my very "not enough caffeine yet" look) I'm over-due for a trim...should be buzzed at the sides).

Yeah earmuffs- those are sooo much more stylish than a well fitted fedora or even- gasp! - a homburg!

Way back whenever men did wear earmuffs with their hats. They were specifically made to fit under the hat and were rather small in circumference and thickness to just cover the ear.

An old work buddy did a career switch 15 or 20 years ago. He enrolled in the barbering program at a community college, got his license, went to work at a cool old shop (1920s-vintage, I think) which he eventually took over. He's doing just fine. Back when he was in school, I was one of the guys he practiced on. Took him 45 minutes to do what he does in five minutes now. I had long gone bald on top by then, so even if he had screwed up (which he didn't), I figured I'd just have him cut it all off and let him try again in another month or so. Now I judge when I'm in need of a haircut by evidence that I've been wearing a hat (aka "hat hair"). I've since moved quite some distance from my pal's shop, so I often cut my hair myself. I don't shave my head, but just cut the hair as short as the clippers take it and then ask my wife to point out the spots I've missed.

Messy hair is not a reason not to wear hats. On the contrary, a hat protects the hair from wind, which messes the hair a lot more. Unless, the wind is too strong and blows the hat away.

...And then you've always got the trusty wind string to button to your coat
