Walking Sticks & Canes.

I have made several out of Crepe Myrtle,light strong.
Here is one I made for my 81 year old Mamma.
I used a piece with a bend then carved in the features of a Mallard Drake with a pocket knife then painted it with colors bought from WalMart .
She really likes it and gets a lot of positive comments.

Here is one I made for myself,handcarved with a pocket knife then handpainted .
T-Rex with blood dripping down out of its mouth.
then took a wood burner and burnt into the wood where all involved in the Making of it,advice on it from the wife and help with the cane as Wolf one of our Kittys would gnaw or scratch it everytime he went by it !

I don't have a shillelagh in my collection so for tonight's Saint Patrick's party & day tomorrow I will be carrying one of these Victorian walking canes.

The handle on this one is gold plated & marked 10g RGP but someone used it like a hammer.

I really like the idea of having a walking stick of some sort to accompany my attire, plus I have issues with my lower back from time to time and it would likely be a legitimate benefit to me. I just have issue finding something I like that doesn't immediately look like some sort of costume accessory.

I saw on the first page people talking about the Cold Steel City Stick. I think I may take a closer look at that as a starting point. It has a nice classic feel to it that looks like it won't look out of place with most outfits.

It recently came available for sale but a bit steep for me to add to my collection. Would love to have it though.

Back in the fall I peeled the bark & sealed this piece of wormwood after it had dried longer than I care to think about. Still needs to be cut to length after I find an appropriate handle. It could be used as a full length walking stick but I would prefer it to be a long cane.

This is a cane that I made out of a Crepe Myrtle Limb
I used a small pocket knife to carve the Head of a T rex (Thats what I call it anyway !)the eyes and mouth,then I bought some craft paint at Walmart,and did the painting of the eyes and blood dripping out of the mouth down on the neck.
I scraped a small place right below the Head and then took a wood burning tool and wrote the date and my name on it.
Then I took some varnish in it let it dry and put a rubber end on it to prevent skidding.
My wife and Kitty (Wolf ,Mouser extraordinaire)even Got in on the making of the cane.

I went to a large antiques and collectibles fair today with my brother, loads of great stuff but these two sticks called out to me
The first is an Indian (probably) sword stick

The second is this charming Opera stick

I love them, what do you all think?

I like the opera cane. Looks like the monocular is removable when not needed. What is the barrel & eye piece made from? I would guess it's low magnification, 3X or maybe 5X? Nice original cane!

The monocular is fixed but it’s very comfortable in the hand, I think it’s made of an early plastic pretending to be ivory, the magnification is as you say 3X-5X at best but it’s enough and a nice little gadget to have

Great get on the opera stick. Unique piece that I enjoyed seeing.

Both very nice examples. I love swordsticks, though thus far I've resisted buying one as I'd have to keep it at home (and they're expensive, as the law here requires them to be at least 100 years old too). The opera stick looks like it would be great for taking to the theatre, plus it would be much easier to keep steady and less hard on thearms for a long performance than traditiona opera glasses.

Nice brass mount also. The barrel is probably celluloid. Some of the opera binoculars appear to be mother of pearl but I don't think they are. That's well made & a great cane!

I've decided on mounting a smooth black Derby type handle made from Buffalo Horn with a bright copper collar on this wormwood cane I'm finishing up. And a bright copper ring above the tip. I think the smooth black horn finish will contrast nicely with the rough wormwood.

Yes, best to keep it at home: even with the blade dulled, they're illegal to carry about. Lovely piece to have, though.

I like the sword stick Matt, from what I saw the last time I was there that'll be a very handy accessory at the Bus Station.

Dug thru some vinewood I have & selected this one. Would like to try my hand at carving a snake walking stick or cane, so been watching videos. I need to buy some new tips for my Rotary tool before I start.

I like some of the old school snake sticks that use the bark as snake skin but they tend to be bigger in diameter & heavier when you don't cut down the vine.
