Just watched this on cable. A great film but what I liked was the palpable excitement of that era when rockabilly, country, delta blues all got all mixed up into the fabulous Memphis rock and roll sound. Then Cash starts with the amphetamines like Garland, Elvis et al and nearly falls over except for redemption thru the lurv of a good woman. There are the cars, the clothes - a great movie, brilliantly acted. Leaves you feelin' guuurd.

I've heard mixed reviews. I've seen it at the theaters. I liked it, plan and simple. Reese and Joaquain (how ever you spell his name, makes you wish he's go back to being Leaf instead) did great tribute performances!
Hello, I'm Jonny Cash!

I am in the "nay" group. I am a fan of Cash and thought the film was flat and lifeless. Phoenix obviously cannot sing. Why insult The Man in Black with the bad impersonation? Is this how someone thought Johnny sounded?

Just sayin', Johnny himself met with and essentially approved of Joaquin.[huh]

...........

I really liked this movie, and thought the two leads had a great dynamic, and the whole movie had a great, dazzling energy throughout.

Liked it, but...

gotta agree with Feraud, at least a little. Found some of the scenes very flat. I know Johnny Cash gave it his seal of approval, but I still found it a little lifeless.
(Doesn't mean I won't watch it again, though;) !

I am a huge Johnny Cash fan from way back, I felt it had something missing, want the real story on Johnny? Read his book "The Man in Black" I won't get into his personal life, thats his business, heck I could sing as bad as Phoenix lol

This morning I watched "Walk The Line". I have mixed feelings about the movie because I wasn't all that impressed with Joaqine Phoenix. However Resse Witherspoon was incredible, I can totally see why she won Best Actress for her portrayal of June Carter. She was amazing. She had this ability to truly become June. I honestly don't know if her singing was like June's, for even though I'm a Johnny Cash fan, I don't have too many of his songs that he recorded with her. But, even if it might not have been June's voice that she impersonated, her singing voice was quite good. I'm actually quite impressed by her ability in this film.
I thought the direction was OK, nothing too remarkable, but I think the point of this was so that the watcher isn't overwhelmed by fancy direction, and can focus on the characters.
So, Reese made this movie. She even made Phoenix's performance better, or at least his bad performance was less noticeable because she was so great. I'm not sure if another actress could have done as good or better a job. Because of her it was a good movie, one of those films you keep watching because you want to see more of what she can do. It is quite possible that this film might have had a very short run if she hadn't been cast in the lead.

Here's what I wrote in the "What Are You Watching" thread....
Bottom line (no pun intended), I liked this movie.

I thought the film was excellent. I thought Joaquin Phoenix's singing was phenomenal. He's not Johnny Cash, but I thought he did a real good job singing his songs.[huh]:) I particularly liked his version of the Cocaine Blues.
