Waistband treatments

Hi Doran,

Inside the trousers on the waist band you often see small strips of rubber, or in older trouser a type of velcro? material. This creates a resistance between the trouser and the shirt and prevents the shirt from riding up and out of the waist band of the trouser. I have seen it a lot on vintage sports clothing such as Flannels and golfing plus fours.

I suspect someone will have a photograph to illustrate this, as I do not have one to hand.

It's called a shirt gripper. This waistband has it already inserted, from an online sewing supplies store.

3" Wide with snugtex shirt gripper and
1 1/4" Ban-Roll for custom made
Trousers.(Black Color Only)
I'll let you in on a secret. I buy it for only $1.25 a yard.
I also have packages of shirt grippers that are cut into oval-shaped strips, ready to sew onto a waistband.

So does this run along the inside of the waistband in a long strip? If I buy it can I simply hand sew it in? How long does it last?

It has thin rubber band-like braids in it. The rubber eventually turns brittle and breaks off in little pieces. I'm not a big fan of this type of waistband liner.

Ah. That sounds bad. Is the velcro-like substance mentioned earlier any better?

The US Navy was once. I have it in 2 officers' uniforms, dress khaki and aviator greens, both Korean War vintage.

Here's the strip of rubbery shirt gripper without the waistband: three strand snugtex. I've been using this and the ovals for 15 years. I am still searching frantically through my workroom to find a package of the oval shirt grippers that I mentioned to show you, to no avail. Of course I can't remember where I got them from, and that information is probably on the package. They seem to fall on my head when I don't need them. I'll keep looking.

This is the grossest phenomenom ever. I have a vintage pair of trousers whose rubber shirt gripper has crystalized into some kind of yellow disgusting flakes with the consistency of dried boogers.

BegintheBeguine did you ever find those ovals you were discussing in this thread? I've got some snugtex on order but those ovals would work so much better.
