William Claude Dunkenfield AKA W. C. Fields was a noted juggler whose abilities were legendary. I have seen a clip of him performing what borders on magic, when juggling cigar boxes. His shorts such as the Golf Expert and the Dentist rival the best of that era's comics. He had a list of great movies and recently a boxed set of DVD's has come out with the 5 following films:
The Bank Dick
International House
It's a Gift
My Little Chickadee
You Can't Cheat an Honest Man
This is a great starter set for W.C. Fields, and a singular regret is that his film "The Man on the Flying Trapeze" has not been released. " Burgalars singing in the basement!" "Mrs. Nesselrodes died from drinking poison liquor!"l I understand that the rights to some films are still tied up in litigation. My hopes are that they may come to an agreement and we get the full library.
"It's a Gift" holds a great place in my heart as I viewed it a number of times with friends and it delights everytime. The first 20 minutes are non stop gags. With an outstanding dialog about Carl La Fong, capital L small a, capital F, small o, small n, small g, La Fong! Fabulous film. And they made a mistake about the afternoon sun. Closed due to molasses. And that loveable Mr. Merkle.
Fields was the first pick to play the Wizard in the Wizard of Oz movie but it didn't happen. Shirley Temple was supposed to be Dorothy and Buddy Epson did start filming as the Tin Man but alergic reations to the silver paint make up procluded that part.
I can't think of the title of the movie where he jumps out of the aeroplane after a dropped bottle of booze and lands in an alpine home (with a gorrilla?) in the front or back yard. I haven't seen that one in 30 years.
So, Fields fans, what's yer favorite?:eusa_clap
Others such as the Big Broadcast of 1938 are fun, here is where Bob Hope first sings "Thanks for the Memories" which will put a smile on your face if you are the right age!
