I am going to be visiting (making a pilgrimage) to NYC next week. I need recc's on where the good vintage is, nice stuff like that.

This is on my "to do" list.

The Met (Madame Butterfly - March 3rd I got a beauty ticket for that!)
The Frick
MoMA
Louis Armstrong House
Chrysler Building & Empire State
Guggenheim
Village Vanguard, The Blue Note, Lenox Lounge for jazz.

If you get a chance, pop past the Bowery and Joey Ramone Avenue, and give a fond thought to dear CBGBs, God rest its soul.

If you're a musicals fan, I can highly recommend Forbidden Broadway (parodies of musical theatre numbers); bonus: it runs on a monday night, when most shows are closed.

Looking for a good place to eat, try the Brooklyn Diner, right opposite the Hard Rock Cafe - fantastic place.

Beyond that, there's the obvious stuff.... I really enjoyed the trip out to Liberty, Ellis Island, Central Park, Empire State....

I'm not as fond as Edward of the Brooklyn Diner; I found it average at best (and it's definitely faux vintage).

But you'll find dozens of good recommendations, many of them vintage in nature, in this thread.

For museums I recommend the Neue and Whitney as well as the one's you've already listed.

For vintage, I recommend going to Google and typing in "Lower East Side vintage." There are tons and tons of tiny places, just walk around down there and keep your eyes peeled!

Maybe Billy & Miriam of Norton Records will be dj'ing while you're here. They did a killer set last night of all 60's soul stuff at the Beauty Bar. I was pushing my 30's blues night while there to anyone who would listen, and I met this real nice tall older guy with long gray hair. He thought my idea for a recreation of an original barrelhouse house party blues night that ignored the folk revival sounded really cool. I told him my name was Mike and thanks! He told me his name was Lenny.... As soon as he did, I coulda kicked myself! Here I am explaining the idea of this strange night to none other than Lenny Kaye himself...! Could I have found more of a musical historian to babble my nonsense to!? hahah

Prior to that, me and some friends went and saw Sit & Die, Co. http://www.sitanddieco.com/ they are a real fun atypical rockabilly band with a lot of heavy early 50's country leanings.

So now that I think of it, come out last night! lol

So, I'm coming in to The Apple on the 24th, The Met for Das Rhinegold on Wed, but my itinerary is not set in stone as of yet. Anyone game to meet up?

I was planning on Swing 46 the following Mon. as I would like to hear the Harlem Renaissance Orch. play, and get some Lindy dancing in.

I'm a pretty decent Balboa dancer as well.:)

If you're in the city on a Monday, I would suggest checking out the Iridium Jazz Club on 51st and Broadway. Les Paul plays there every Monday night. It's an intimate club with excellent martinis, ambiance and service. And did I mention Les Paul?

Nice. Thanks everyone. I will definitely be making more than one trip; I have so many choices with very little time.

I know about Iridium, but I think that I'll be opting for Swing46 and The Harlem Renaissance Orch; then again, it is Les Paul. Tough choice.

Now I see that Les Paul does two shows, at 8 & 10, so I'll catch the early show and then head over to Swing 46 for dancing. That takes care of my last night in The Apple, a nice way to round it out.:)

So far so good; Das Rhinegold at The Met was AMAZING....I feel very lucky as it is ending it's run. My first opera, and I chose a great one.

Anyone can PM me if a meetup is on anyone's mind. The last nite before I leave is Iridium for Les Paul and wrap it up w/ dancing at Swing 46.

Still open for suggestions.
