Two people making the same mistake?

Here's my guess (and it's only a guess): because guys wearing A-2 jackets shot at and bombed the Japanese during WWII -- and vice-versa, of course.
It's funny, I always wondered why the Japanese became really interested in WWII flight jackets for that exact reason.
I take it that means it came from the USS Ulysses S. Grant, and not a decendent of the general/president.
